That's just BS, I drive a 3/4 ton truck with a grill guard and a 7.3L turbodiesel, I bought it because there's nothing on the market that gets that kind of MPG and has the hauling capacity.

I also love the tech that goes into hybrids, and have test driven everything and every generation of hybrid, except the Lexus. I was on the list to buy one of the first shipment of Prius's in the US, and elected to buy a TDI Golf instead.

I've also seriously looked into converting a car to full electric (impractical), purchasing a Corbin Sparrow, The CNG powered (and recently killed by Honda) Civic, etc...

Hell, I spent an hour looking at electric scooters this morning, trying to figure out if one would meet my needs to get to the subway station near where I live ATM...

But don't let me keep you from proving the OP's point.

Get back with me when you've gotten scooped up off the pavement with a scoop stretcher from an accident on your bike or motorcycle like I have...

So, are you a Prius basher? I can't keep track of all of you...oh, and you've done nothing to disprove what I said.

You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, hot pink, with whale skin hubcaps and all leather cow interior and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights. Yeah! And I'm gonna drive around in that baby at 115 miles an hour, getting 1 mile per gallon, sucking down quarter pounder cheeseburgers from McDonald's in the old-fashioned non- biodegradable Styrofoam containers! And when I'm done suckin' down those grease ball burgers I'm gonna wipe my mouth on the American flag and then toss the Styrofoam containers right out the side, and there ain't a God-damned thing anybody can do about it.

If that's what makes you feel happy. Means jack shit to me personally.

The reason I have to think that Prius owners are treehuggers is those hollywood actors and actress getting to their events in a Prius instead of a limousine because they want to save the world.

No, it was the government encouraging the use and development of alternate fuel vehicles. If people buy them, the technology will develop faster. What better way to get people to buy them than to give them incentives? Elitism has absolutely nothing to do with it. Government does the same thing by giving tax breaks for solar power, wind power, and hybrid technology.

Another thing people rarely factor in with hybrids (especially those with the HOV stickers on them) is the resale value. You could buy a brand new Prius 3 years ago and probably sell it for almost what you paid for it. They are in demand and hold their value extremely well. Meanwhile a $50,000 Mercedes or BMW will drop $20-30k in that same time period.

HOV lanes are designed to encourage people to carpool in order to alleviate congestion. Some liberal douche who drives (by him/herself) in a hybrid is still consuming a lot of energy and doesn't help the congestion problem. There is a reason why Caltrans doesn't give out those stickers anymore. It was wrong to begin with and I'm glad they ended the program.

Would we still use as much oil as we do today if all of the highways around rush hour allows free flow speed in all metropolitan areas?

Don't tell these treehuggers that the batteries in their hybrid is extremely harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly, and it'll probably take a lot of energy to properly recycle one of those. You cannot beat the laws of thermodynamics with a POS internal combustion engine.

Why are we still on the subject of HOV lanes? If the program is over for 1 person in a hybrid, its over.

Batteries "extremely" harmful? That is incorrect.

The Prius uses a Nickel Metal Hydride battery: Toyota link, which is at best only slightly toxic. It is also easy and economical to recycle. battery university link.

If you're going to continue to debate in this thread, bring some facts and sources to the table, instead of this nonsense that has been rehashed a thousand times already.

if they actually wanted a small economical hatch that drove well, they'd get a Mazda3.

If not,

I started this thread because I want to know where this assumption comes from. Just making a statement like "every1 knows this" isn't proof.

And this is why I bought a Ford Fusion Hybrid....doesn't look like a hybrid, drives and rides nice, the seats are quite comfy and my last two tanks of gas have lasted 816.7 and 832.3 miles each at 50.139mpg and 50.967 mpg. Sure it cost a little more upfront(28K after tax) but I qualify for a 3,400 tax credit and I do get a huge fuel saving over my previous car.

And I didn't buy it to be green per say although that was part of the decision.

We have a prius owner at my job who is very smug about her prius. it's frankly annoying.

And as a parting shot, I like driving a hybrid that doesn't look like a hybrid so to speak. I like that people will say, wow thats a sharp looking car and then only after their initial observation do they see the small hybrid badges and then their reaction is "oh its a hybrid too? Didn't know hybrids look like 'that' "(whatever 'that' is, I'm assuming a Prius shape)

The Fusion is a nice car. Had it been available at the time I was shopping, I would have gotten one.

Again smugness is about the individual. Have you ever dealt with ricers? Those guys with the super riced out cars & the fancy paint jobs think they're all that and a bag of chips.

Excuuuuse me? There is nothing wrong with ricers. Humor and good laughter is good once in a while ricer power!

Back to the OP, my aunt purchased a new Camry Hybrid because she wanted to reduce her carbon footprint while driving a normal looking car, then she goes home to her 5 bedroom 4000sf home, cranks the AC down to 68 degrees and preheats her 10,000 gallon pool to a nice 86 degrees so she can whip out a starbucks mocha frappuccino out of a can leave the back door open so she can feel the cool breeze out of the house while sitting in her pool.

This is my perception of a "smug prius owner." Seriously, think before you preach.

For some it is, for some it isn't. Personally, I'm not trying to make a statement for reasons I already mentioned.
Someone please get me a GPS. I'm in "Deniel" and I don't know how to get home.

You said you want to help lessen the US dependence on foreign oil.

You cannot distinguish between your interpretation of an advertisement, versus what people actually think when they chose a vehicle?

I feel like I am arguing with imbeciles.

I give up. Nobody has shown me any concrete proof that people buy Priuses in order to be "smug". It's all the same garbage reasoning (if it can even be called that): "because I said so".

I do, and since you can't easily buy a diesel in CA, a Hybrid is a good way to go about it. My primary reason for getting it, however, was because of the technology. I love cutting edge tech and am usually an early adopter. I don't go around preaching to anyone about carbon footprints, nor do I have "save the world" bumper stickers on my car. In other words, I didn't buy it to make a statement. Others may see it and through their own bias may assume that I'm trying to make a statement, but the same can be said about anyone who drives a luxury car or a sports car or an SUV, etc. Are they all trying to make a statement? I'm rich, I'm macho.....

Ok since we're imbeciles what proof do you have that they didn't buy it cus of the statement it makes???

You do know that the reason why they made the Pruis look different is cus people want other people to know that they drive a hybrid right? Regular cars that just have hybrid badges on them don't sell well cus they look like a regular car. People want their hybrid to look different. People in general want their "green" cars to look different so that people know what they're driving. It's part of the appeal that goes with it.

So a company that advertises a car as "green" means nothing? Your neighbor could have gotten a car that was just as comfortable and had just as much room but he wanted a hybrid and that's what sold it. Buying a hybrid says something about someone. Think whatever you want though cus I'm an imbecile and you're not. People buy a Pruis cus there's something different about it and that's the appeal.

I'm an imbecile so I'll leave your thread since you're so smart.

I would say that they don't necessarily want a hatchback, they just get one because the Prius happens to be a hatchback. Then they love to brag about how many interior cubes it has.

Take the Prius badge off the vehicle and ask someone, would you drive a hatchback? They'd likely say no. Likewise, ask them if they'd like a station wagon or a minivan.

Without the hype going along with the Prius name, a hatchback/wagon is normally a non-starter for the average consumer.

Acutally, the reason the Prius looks like it does is something called Aerodynamics. It's why it has a lower drag coefficient than most exotic sports cars. It's also the reason the new Honda Insight looks almost exactly like a Prius.

I know the topic is about the 'smugness' factor that was made popular by South Park, but if anything I have seen that most hybrid owners are far from smug and are non judgmental of other vehicles and drivers. On the other hand I have been flipped off while filling up, constantly get tailgated, honked at, and passed by aggressive drives even when driving with the flow of traffic. Some Hybrid (mostly Insight owners from my experience) have faced even much worst including being threatened physically. This seemed to peak last summer with gas prices.

My parents drive a Prius, they even bought it on my advice to replace an Aztek. They are far from smug, but do like spending less on gas when my mom drives to town as they live in the country and when going on trips. Regular Idaho rural people.

When I first bought my used Insight over 2 years ago it wasn't to make a statement to anyone, but to get the #1 fuel efficient car ever sold in the US. However I freely share the fact that the Insight gets more than 2X the mileage of most cars on the road. Most people are unaware that such cars even exist and have the assumption that 30mpg highway is as good as it gets. Most still operate on the assumption that hybrids including the Prius only get 40 mpg. Even my parents average 55mpg in their Prius and my dad now brags to me that he can get 25mpg in his half ton pickup. For the record I also have a half ton Chevy, but prefer to use the Insight as my primary mover.
