One time during the summer a skunk sprayed right outside our house and we had the windows open. It stank so bad, I dreamt that my speaker cables were burning and that's what I was smelling. I had never incorporated a stench into my dreams before...I hate skunks!

That's nice of you to release him away from your property...most people would probably just kill it. Have you considered how you will get the cage in a vehicle and drive it somewhere without him (or her) spraying? I bet if you threw a sheet or something over the cage so it couldn't see, it might not be stressed so much....and not spray.

Very handy for ripping into those trash bags left out and getting at the good stuff inside. Also, I think they are also good climbers like raccoons... :)

Skunks are a major pest around here. They smaller pets (like cats and some dogs, although in all honesty they instigate the attack), and reek in general. If they can't lift their tail, they won't spray at all. I'm not sure if this is because the spray is acidic or whatever, but it's true. When transporting it, either get it into a small cage, or something to that extent. To prevent drowning them, my neighbor has a cage that is too small for them to raise that tail, and then shoots them with a 22. no smell afterwards, and if you're going to murder the thing, it might as well be quick as opposed to minutes of drowning it.

heh yeah I don't mean to sound like a wuss or anything, but thats kinda hardcore. The only thing I could ever drown is a spider that I flush down the toilet. I draw the line at vertebrates.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to have done with my husband, but even without the procedure he is a fine pet.

Oh darn.... it's too late to give you suggestions for places to release the skunk...
(mall, shopping plazas, back seat of enemies unlocked car, ...)
We had a family of skunks move in under a porch area on our house... I had to trap them, one a night for quite a few days. They really won't bother you unless you threaten them.

If you live on a farm those inhibitions go away quickly. Hell I've got redneck cousins living on our farm that after shooting a rabbit...if their .22 didn't kill it then they jump out of the truck, pick it up, and drop kick it like they were punting a football. I mean, killing rabbits is part of the job down there...but them's crazy nuts. All three just joined army rangers too.
