I am running WIN 98se with IE 5.5 and I am not able to open any "FILE.EXT" attachments that are sent to me in Outlook Express. Can anyone explain how to correct this?

It could be just a files associations problem. Make sure that the file you want to open opens with the correct application when you click on the file when it's on the desktop. If it opens ok then the file associations are correct but if it doesn't then you will have to set it manually in explorer.

Open explorer, click view/folder options, then the file types tab - you can create/ check the files associations from there.

I had that problem with my old ISP.. it's because certain email readers like ones made by Microsoft send messages in a special format that the ISP can't handle...

with my new ISP all messages come in fine..

With that email attachment that I could not
open "FILE.EXT" (4.96 KB).. I Right clicked on it,selected properties, under "details" tab, I Selected "Message Source" it said the following...

>If you are reading this text, then your mail reader does not support
> the MIME (Multipurpose internet Mail Extensions) standard. To take
> full advantage of the features of this message, you need to upgrade
> your mailer to a MIME v1.0 compliant package. Some parts of this
> message may be in a human readable form.

After scrolling down the source code, I was able to read the text that was send in this attachment.

So, how do I "upgrade"? I already have Outlook Express version 5.5. What do I do next? I manually set the file associations to be sure Outlook Express opens it this type of file. Maybe I should do the radical unistall IE 5.5 then reistall it; that would be a last ditch effort. Any suggestions?
