british accents are EASY as hell to understand in MOVIES.... trying listening to them in real life... its much worse.

i went to a friends wedding... she married this guy whos only been in america a couple years and him and his whole family have a heavy british accent. sadly he made a speech and i(and about everybody else) couldnt understand 1/3rd of what he said. he would tell a joke and us americans had no clue about what was said but his equally accented british family would laugh their asses off...

It's all about localism. Britain probably has one of the most diverse variety of accents per square mile in the world. You can go 10 miles and the accent can be strongly different. If you think lock stock is hard to understand, try speaking to a Shetlander.

I can understand it but I can't stand the English accent. (I guess we Americans are the ones with the accent but hey whatever)... just sounds like they make an extra effort with the syllables if you think about it... just annoying to my ears personally. Harry Potter... that dude from the Dyson vacuums commercial is the worst... I literally cringe.

Damn u guys are sheltered.....as the guy above me said britain has many diverse regional accents....I find it easy to understand(even though I am scottish)....Scotland has many different accents too but if you go to Birmingham or bradford in the midlands you pretty much have to be able to speak Punjabi to get by....See what I mean by diverse cultures!

Now, the Scots just don't speak coherently. You don't have to buy it, that's just the way it is.
You have obviously been to Glasgow or Aberdeen then!! They have a whole language of their own...ye ken what I mean!?

those from Edinborough are incomprehensible
You are obviously stupid. The accent in Edinburgh, I find, is one of the most easily understood scottish accents....you seem to have met one of the many weegies (glaswegians) or sheep shaggers(Aberdonians) who frequent this fair city!

And following on with Stereotypes.....all people from the southern US are inbred....(only a movie stereotype!!)

****Climbs into flame retardant suit****

What, in the same way that we Brits all cringe when we hear a "thick" American accent, usually Southern? I think a "strong British accent" (whatever the hell that is) is preferable to an American one with a double helping of adenoids.

You're probably used to hearing the Queen's English (e.g. Captain Picard on Star Trek). The working class in England doesn't talk like that. They can be hard to understand.

BEST. MOVIE. EVAR!

A good portion of my life was spent in a British private school, surrounded by Brits of various stripes. I've always been able to comprehend heavy British/Irish accents and slang. My folks would use me as a de facto translator when we were in the UK, same thing when I went to Ireland with a class one summer. Although I should point out that some farmers from Kerry gave me a hard time. My parents friends in Scotland told them they thought I could sound like a local when I want too (a huge compliment coming from them - they apparently listened to me joking with their son).

I'd just like to recapitulate on Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels being an awesome movie. Snatch doesn't compare.

I just can't understand the gypsies in Snatch

Yeah, the Tinkers and/or Gypos can be be pretty hard to understand, even for English and Irish. I was surprised Brad Pitt was able to sound so convincing - usually it's the actors from Britain, Australia, and New Zealand who can do good American accents, yet American actors sound like crap trying to sound Scottish or Irish (a la Richard Gere in The Jackal - god he sucked!)

Hey if that dude from the Dyson commercials is Australian, then I'll rag on them instead. Until I find out otherwise, you're it. *cringe* 😉

When i was a kid, I mean when I was about 8, we were fying from heathrow to jfk and lots of brits on board. Even then we had issues with the accent telling mother "these guys don't speak english mom" gentlemen on the seat in front of us turns as says "we speak the queens english lad" we my brothers and I laughed at him and sung "god bless america".. Seemed to get a rise out of a lot of pasengers🙂

I enjoy the English accent. I think it's pretty sexy when spoken by a woman.

freaking impossible to understand some people!
THE British accent? That's like saying all Americans sound like Mo-Rons based on talking to someone from the Bayou...

I find them a welcome change of pace, but easily understandable. I get an occasional call from some customers in Greenock and although it is a heavy brogueish accent it is still 10x easier to understand than an Indian call center

I always get a hard time from my friends when i go back home to Ireland... They tell I'm "losing touch with the soil" or some such nonsense.. Usually takes me a day or two to get the inflection back... South Londoners suck for speaking though... open your mouth, fill it with porridge, and bag, you're a Southie...

But those bloody sheep huggers up in Scotland... make sure you were some rain gear... and protective goggles... and perhaps an umbrella...

😛
