discovery channel in the late 90s was better heh, but not that it's good now, just that I liked their programming of the mid-to-late 90's programming better. TLC used to be awesome, until they started to show whatnottowear and all those interior design crap. not so learning channel anymore.

History channel, Travel, NG channel, Discovery channel = BEST.

In my opinion, the shows on Discovery and those other channels have been gradually moving from intelligent content toward more sensationalistic content. i.e. "Tsunami, are we next" or whatever the show was called. Educational show, but geared somewhat more toward sensationalism. Ditto for that show on Yellowstone (supervolcano).
They're still the best channels, but the quality is going downhill.

I have to agree with DanTMWTMP above... some of the shows, especially on "The LEARNING Channel" are utter crap. "What not to wear"??!
And, please forgive me for this... Orange County Chopper, Monster Garage, etc. are enjoyable shows, but again - they make it obvious that the corporate emphasis is far less than educational content. It's all about ratings and getting commercials now.

Ahhh, another way to phrase "it's all about getting ratings and commercial dollars":
It's "making the shows appealing to the average viewer."

And, hopefully we have some idea of the intelligence level of the average viewer.

And lastly, while I'm calmly ranting about these channels going down the tubes (but still my favorite channels),
Can someone please hire someone to help the mythbusters out? "you'll get wetter walking in the rain than running in the rain the same distance" - give me a break. At least, they got it right when the did a "myths revisited." I've seen them get quite a few incorrect conclusions though... most recently, I walked through the living room, kids were watching the show... "what are they trying to prove or disprove?" I asked. "That you can't split an arrow with another arrow." "Sure you can, but the grain of the wood has to run the length of the arrow."
Mythbuster's conclusion: "You can't." Why? "because of the grain of the wood." *sigh* They're great at building things, but their scientific method is somewhat lacking. Oh, and how about using something other than gunpowder to propel your ice bullet? Maybe... CO2, as in a paintball??

EXACTLY. Their shows aren't that great anymore.

I really do like History Channel though. They have some good, interesting, and educational shows.

ComCast in my area has I think 5 Discovery channels in all. There's ALWAYS some mindboggling show on. Last night on DiscoveryHealth they had a lady who was pregnant for 46 years. That was unbefsckinglievable how they found that out.

EDIT: Actually, it's 7!
Discovery
Discovery Kids
Discovery Health
Discovery Science
Discovery Home
Discovery Times
Discovery Military

This thread just rose from the dead.

Cash cab I think has its allure but after a couple of shows I got bored of it since its sort of repetitive except that the people and questions change.
Dirty Jobs is kind of fun since the guy makes it entertaining.

I've seen the commercials for the new American Choppers show where they build the bike for individual people. Looks neat. I think it's on Monday night.
