If the only CD drives that the woman has ever seen are slot-loading drives (for example, if her first and only computer was a slot-loading iMac) and if she was not told that her new PC has a tray-loading as opposed to a slot-loading drive, then the confusion is understandable.

This is not so much stupidity as lack of exposure and / or full disclosure.

That's pretty bad....

I wonder, would it be possible to design a fool-proof system, or would the fools simply 'improve' themselves? Hmm...

Although the older generation has some difficulties accepting these new wonderful computers, even though they've been around for consumers for the past TWO DECADES, it amazes me that there are still people out there like this.

The person that put the cdrom into the floppy drive was ~23. My grandfather calls me with very few problems.

For every hundred stories or so of stupidity, you get one like this

This guy was eager to learn, not a know it all, and not trying to do things he had no business doing. AND he paid the guy well.

Not is she stupid for not saying anything after the second or third CD why the hell didn't she let her kids do it?

When Ever I do uprades or installs for people I ENCOURGE there involvement. An informed user is way better that a dumb one. I am going to build a system for my cousin and he was AMAZED that it he bought the stuff I would HELP HIM put it together. I really enjoyed my First build and it made me more aware of what was in the box. If I am doing a NO CHARGE install for a freind/relative, I almost ALWAYS DEMAND that they at least watch!

That one was 'cute'. Now, where do I find people who will pay me $50 to install RAM. 😀

That's not as uncommon as you might think, at least it wasn't back when cd-roms were a semi-new thing. My first job at 16 was as a computer technician, and we'd get quite a few of them where they jammed cds into the 5.25" floppy drives. You would think they'd stop after experiencing a bit of resistance, but no, they jam it in until it compromises the drive.

Oh man....sounds like some of the hillbillies I work with. I was over at a co-worker's house on Friday putting in a new HD that Gateway had sent him as a replacement.
Got the OS loaded up and then his internet account from a local provider, which none of the log-in info that he had written down was right. He insisted, even got to the point of arguing, that we needed to call Gateway because they messed up his internet!

Man.....I believe most of the IT horror stories I read.
