I can't see my "path" in life anymore with a career?

I am 21 now, and a senior Poly Sci major, which happened after my CS dreams flopped. I am freaking out, wondering what the hell I am going to do with this degree. I think I would like to work in IT, or for the State Dept. which are very different career fields. I feel as if my chances for either are slim to none.

How am I going to get a job with a Political Science degree, or work for the State Dept/CIA/FBI when I have no experience and they are not currently looking for entry level positions? All I can find is professional jobs with lots of experience. I don't even know what gameplan to go with getting on track for an career in IT. Poly Sci is definetely not the way, although it was good experience.

Then their is the avenue of Grad School....but all I can think of is a possible MBA at the same school I am at. Then I can look forward to an additional 30k in loans!

I am so confused! :(

What seems to be the best path? Any information on how to get started would be greatly appreciated.

Get drunk and forget about it. You'll figure something out, just not today.

The programmer who's been at our company the longest has an English Literature degree. We've got someone with a degree in Dieticianism or some such crap. I think having a degree is more important than what the degree is for.
I'm also 26 and don't know my life's path... I'm just going with the flow.

you're 21, the possibilities are limitless.

For example, maybe you could do volunteer/intern work for a local political organization or politician, they probably could use people with IT experience and some political knowledge.

I wouldn't worry too much about moneyat your age, it isn't all that hard to make enough money to get by, if you're willing to work.

go to law school and you'll be able to work for those places, but if thats too much work/money (although it would pay off for the rest of your life), get the MBA with a concentration in MIS or IT. You'll need to work a few years before you go to grad school though. Have it relate to what you want to do after grad school..

I've always wondered WTF the point of a Political Science degree is myself. The only people I knew in PolySci programs wantred to be AF pilots, and needed uber-grades with lots of time leftover for extra-curricular activities (ie. sports, private pilots license, ROTC brown-nosing, etc.)

we should start a business. Isn't that how all rich people start? They are aging and don't know what they want to do with their life...so they start some random business and make millions?

Or we could just end ourselves. Both are equal possibilities.

Sure, it's how alot more living-in-my-parents-basement-at-35 start also :D

Or we could just end ourselves. Both are equal possibilities.

I have a history degree and I am working as a programmer/dvd authoring tech. Granted I took several (read 60 credits worth) of comp sci classes. My degree is still in history. Things work out eventually. Its not always about what your degree is in. I had no clue what I was going to do when I graduated. I still don't know for sure what direction I want to go as I can't do this forever. I'll figure it out someday :)

That would be nice...let's see what kinda of company. It would have to be online because there is no way you're getting me down to Arizona. I would explode the second I left the plane. Let's see we need to find something that no one needs, no one actually wants, something that makes almost no sense to have and that is of no practical use for anything. If we can find what that is we could really make millions.

I'd move to Seattle. I don't mind rain.

But...yes...we must come up with this item. Too bad Wdugagnga isn't around anymore...he could have provided us with a product idea. :(

I seem to be getting the "go with the flow" attitude from many poeple. I realize everyone is thinking, WHY POLY SCI? But, at the time it seemed to be my only option without starting over and taking another 2.5-3 years of school.

Who knows, maybe I will take everyones advice and just head into the job market once I am done with my bachelors.

My da got his bachelors in Poly Sci, and then went to Medical school. Your degree doesn't dictate your job.

The easy way out, maybe a smart choice, would be possibly finding a government job with my BS, and get some experience before I go for my masters?
