I was getting some crashing and Norton was part of the cause. I was removing Norton Systemworks in my troubleshooting but got a crash half-way through the procedure.

Norton will now neither re-install nor be removed! GRRAHHH! What now?

Command-prompt "deltree norton~whatever"? Using XP Pro is a little different than the command prompt I've grown up with for almost 20 years.

Can you even get into the GUI?

BTW, deltree is replaced with rm or rmdir. Delete all Norton Files from program files, program files\common files, %userprofile%\application data,%userprofile%\local settings\application data, and search the registry if you can.

I would call Norton tech support and ask them what the registry entries are, delete them, then also remove the uninstall information located in the windows dir....they should be able to answer these questions. This is thats prohibiting you from uninstalling.

im sry you ever subjected yourself to such bloated POS software

I've uninstalled this program on several machines without a problem. Suggest you try to clean up your system a bit, and use a registry cleaner to delete references to Norton or Symantec. Reinstall with all other applications shut down and then uninstall with all other applications shut down.

I am not sure which version you have but here is a link for 2003 version.

Removing Norton SystemWorks? 2003 in Windows XP/2000 after Add/Remove Programs does not work

I also know that there is a program that Norton has to do this. Just look around Norton's knowledge base.

File to clean up registry

I am sure there are more files there, look around. I have run 2002 version no problem but when trying to use the 2003 version, I could not get it to work. On an XP system I tried the 2003 version with lockups when boot up the system. I tried everything in Nortons knowledge base and e-mailed them but it still would hang at startup. It would start doing it after the last update was installed. After the third time of reloading Windows, I got it fixed. I installed Panda. Later, I tried loading the 2003 Norton Personal Internet Protection on a Windows98 system and had the system hang at shut down. Un-installed the program and the system was fine again. I will not be using Norton again. Just look at their Knowledge Base and you will see all kinds of problems. If the software was any good, the knowledge base would be small. Just my 2 cents.
