I seem to have some file i/o issue with my boot drive so none of the backup image programs i try will run. they all crash with an error, or end with a message.

ive tried to fix the drive, but nothing seems to work. all crash.

SO, i thought i'd xcopy the files onto a new drive. Workable? I read that xcopy /r/i/c/h/ek/e/y/ doesnt work on *win xp* boot disks.. 🙁

is there a better way?

The best way I know of is TrueImage by Acronis - current version 10. It will make a bootable CD - use it and the clone function to replicate one drive to another and have it immediately bootable.

But, if the problem is software, then the new drive will most likely have the same problem. If you asre running XP, consider a Repair install.
