Hey everyone I have the biostar m7NCD-AO2 socket A motherboard with the Ac97 codec which is supposed to support 5.1 but I can only find one jack in the back of the computer that will send my speakers (altec lansing 5.1) a signal and they interpret it only as 4 channel audio! How do I turn on 5.1 so I have true surround sound?

Does your mobo only do SPDIF? If so you're gonna have to get a new soundcard

It should remap the mic and line-in jacks for the rear surround and center-sub channels.

Does the Biostar have the Nforce control panel applet? If it does, run the Speaker setup wizard. There should be an option to remap the mic and line-in jacks for 5.1. Rear should be line-in center-sub should be mic jack.

Is a bracket available to add 6 channel analog outputs? If not, the 5.1 only refers to a pre-encoded stream (DVD) for external decoding because otherwise the S/PDIF can only output 2 channel PCM (can be matrixed stereo). Perhaps if you set the CP for 2 channel you can select some better mock surround modes in software or on the AL hardware but in lieu of said bracket a sound card will be required to take full advantage of 4+ channel DirectSound3D.
