I can't find any propylene glycol

I"m sad, I can't find any propylene glycol locally I'm trying to build a "tupperdor" to hold my cigars and I need it to control the humidity. I've tried the local livestock stores and pharmacies, any other ideas on where to dig some up other than ordering online?

Try your local auto parts store. Last time I checked Propylene Glycol was also known as antifreeze.

Yup ethylene glycol is antifreeze adn toxic. I need propylene glycol which is a nontoxic hydroscopic substance, often used as a solvent for oral and injectable drugs. So I need to find a heroin fiend

I wonder if those cloth covered "things" (not sure what is inside) that are placed into stringed instrument cases would work for cigars?

YMM are you talking about those little silica pouches used as dessicant in camera cases and stuff too?

Those would work to keep the case dry, but thats not actually what I'm wanting Cigars need to be stored at about 70% humidity (people debate it by a few percent) to keep them "good." In this tupperdor of mine if I add in a piece of florists foam soaked in water it will raise the humidity quite high, propylene glycol helps keep the humidity at about 70% so its the perfect thing! A 50-50 mix of it and distilled water is idela

Propylene glycol is also the "fog juice" bars use in their fog machines. At least it was a few years ago unless it changed recently. You need fog juice, not 'haze juice' which is different. And not the flavored kind of fog juice either, well, maybe if you want flavored cigars I guess.

The ones for violin/stringed instruments are definitely to impart dampness, not take away. Below 35% humidity is bad, like in winter months. I did a quick check and one model is called a "dampit", but it works by slowly release water moisture in the intrument's surroundings, doesn't sound like it uses the propylene glycol as you'd mentioned.

Thanks gregg, I think I"m gonna have to wind up mailordering since no one in town seems to stock it! Maybe I need to call my old chem teacher I've found a place with a pint for $5 so its not too bad, I just want it today

Go to your nearest high school and ask a chemistry teacher where he/she buys locally. If it is not a controlled substance you should be able to find some easily. My mom is a chem teacher and she always knows of a couple local distributors of chemicals.
