I listed a TV on craigslist and got the following:

Good, I'm ok with your price and I will buy from you but the
issue is I have a tight schedule planning for my wedding so the
following details is needed for mailing you a certified check,
.........

Name to be on check____
address____
City / state ________
Zip Code_____
phone #_________

Info is required so I mail you the payment asap via Ups or Fedex and
pick up will be done by a shipper at my cost after you've cashed the
check,I'll also include an extra $50 for your run around while cashing
it.Hope you reply soon,my details is as follows.............

He actually lists his name and address in CA at the end of the message. (I'm at the east coast)

Thoughts?

If ya gotta ask...

BUT, considering your user name...I think you should go ahead with the deal. What could possibly go wrong?

100% without a doubt SCAM.

My sarcasm meter is off today so I am not sure if this thread is being sarcastic. 😛

if you have to ask....

scam. The check will be fake and will be written for an amount above what you want for the TV and he will ask you to send that extra amount back with the tv etc etc...

Seriously though... you shouldn't be allowed on the internet if you have to ask this question.

alright I'm used to the "I'll paypal you this amount and you send it to me scams" this says he will pay for shipping.. which kinda threw me... I don't see how he'll pull this off not that I doubt it's a scam.

You know what I'm kind of tempted to do? When I post stuff on CL, I now get offered to receive money via paypal all the time. Why not take the guy's $500 or whatever he offers and call paypal when you have the money to see where it came from?

But yes, back to the post. Obvious scam dude.

Why would he even be looking at your TV if he lives on the other side of the country?

Think about it.

It asks me for my details instead of having me send it somewhere...

lulz? How long have you been on the internet?

Red flags:

-Horrible grammar
-Buyer is "ok" or "pleased" with the price
-Has to explain the "urgency" of his situation (in this case, a wedding)
-No spaces after periods when starting a new sentence
-Willing to overpay (extra $50 in this case)
-Wants to send a certified check

Like try to trace where the guy is or something?

Those scammers usually use a hacked paypal account to pay and when the real owner of the paypal account realizes that he's out $XXX, he'll do a reverse charge or whatever.

Wow, I have the same seller. You should ask him if he wants to send his mover by your place to pick up the TV.

Hello,

Thanks for the swift response to my mail,as the item is still
available, I will send a check to cover the cost of my purchase as am
completely satisfied with the advert.I will need the details of whom &
where to mail the draft. It will be delivered by the United Parcel
Service within 2-3 days. Please note 'United Parcel Service' do not
deliver to P.O.Box addresses.

1.Name to be on the check
2.Home address
3.Mobile #

Kindly delete the advert on Craig's List as am totally committed to
buying from you to save me cost, My mover will be coming over for the
pick up right only after the payment as been delivered and I want you
to understand that, I would have love to call but am a deaf , So
please send me an email only
.

You never fail to create threads in which the second poster almost instinctively points how the stupidity of your post and the connection to your user name.

OP,

I'm going to assume that you were 100% serious when you asked for advice. If you haven't already done so ... go to CL and click on the "avoid scams and fraud" link. Here is how CL recommends you conduct business when using their site. After reading these ... do you still need to ask?:

You can sidestep would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules:

* DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts on craigslist.
* NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
* FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
* CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
* NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
* AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.
* DO NOT RENT HOUSING WITHOUT SEEING THE INTERIOR, OR PURCHASE EXPENSIVE ITEMS SIGHT-UNSEEN - in all likelihood that housing unit is not actually for rent and that cheap item does not exist.
* DO NOT SUBMIT TO CREDIT CHECKS OR BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR A JOB OR FOR HOUSING UNTIL YOU HAVE MET THE INTERVIEWER OR LANDLORD/AGENT IN PERSON.
