I can't even play a lousy dvd

I get the following error message when playing any type of video in VMC

"Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer."

The video will play for a few minutes (sometimes more, sometimes less) and then the video will stop and I get this message. So far I have tried playing dvds and live tv with the same result.

My system is the following:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz
Scythe SCMNJ-1000 80mm Sleeve "NINJA MINI" CPU Cooler
GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400
A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB
AVerMedia AVerTV Combo PCIe
LG Black Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16x
Antec Fusion Remote Black

This is a new system that I put together and I have not installed much additional software on it. Just Powerdvd and Media player classic.

This is very frustrating so I would very much appreciate any help.
 
Download VLC and use that to play your DVD and you will be good to go. If I was you I would also download the CCCP codecs as well in case they are needed down the road. Both are free
 
Yea, I've done quite a bit of googleing myself and found that I am not alone in my unfortunate predicament. However, as you said, there seems to be no concrete cause or solution.

I'll double check my drivers, although I'm pretty sure they are all up to date.

If all else fails I guess I'll try the vista codec pack referred to in the link you provided. As a rule, I try to stay away from codec packs. But I am a pragmatist, so if a codec pack is the solution then so be it.

Oh, and I'll definitely give VLC a try. But only as a temporary solution. Ultimately I want to use VMC for live tv, dvr and all my media needs.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised that there's no solution present and quite a number of people have actually had this problem and posted them on other forums. Thing is, even I try and stay away from different codec packs myself. That's the reason I run VLC on my system. My thought would be stick to VLC for playing your movies.

You need codecs to play your DVD'S, either K-lite, CCCP or Vista codecs. You have nothing to fear from these. Be advised that Media Center will not play everything you may run into. I hear Win 7 has them built in

Yes, Windows 7 has built in codecs. I just read this.
