Once again the goverment knows what is best for you.

I already do drive 55 mph and get an extra 40-50 miles on a tank of gas. That said, why in the hell does the goverment feel the need to push shit upon me.

State officials have floated an idea tossed out a few years ago like bad 1970s bell-bottoms: reducing speed limits to conserve fuel.
Now, in this age of unbearably high gas prices, could 55 be the new 70?
Gov. Jennifer Granholm didn't embrace or rule out the notion Wednesday. A fellow Democrat, state Rep. Aldo Vagnozzi of Farmington Hills, introduced a resolution calling on Congress to reinstitute the national 55-m.p.h. speed limit implemented during the 1970s oil crisis.

I don't see a problem with it. Most of the tough guys on this forum will probably come in this thread guns-a-blazin, but the majority of the time people need to slow the fuck down anyway. I can see having a higher speed limit on long, empty roads, but in the city there really is no reason to drive that fast. Leave 2 minutes earlier instead of driving faster. Patience is a virtue.

I'd like to see them try that in Texas. A 350 mile drive @ 55 mph would be a fucking blast.

Is the speed limit normally 70 in the city where you live?

It was a stupid idea in the 70s and it's a stupid idea today. It took nearly 30 years to get repealed when they passed it in the 70s.

they should keep it 60-65
In Canada its 100km/h and I feel it is sufficient. The average person does 120km/h +

I was not alive in the 70's, so I'll ask a dumb question - wasn't there an actual gas shortage back then? Weren't there times when a gas station wouldn't have any gas to sell?

that was a real shortage, not like the fake one we have now.

Pardon me if I don't believe that I should be limited to driving a speed that you feel is sufficient. You are currently completely free to drive at your sufficient speed.

The majority of vehicles are most efficient at approximately 42 MPH.

The Government should therefore make the speed limit on the Eisenhower interstate highway system 42 MPH.

What study is this based on, and in what year was it performed?

A high speed limit doesn't mean that you MUST drive at that speed. Want to save gas? Drive 55. If people want to drive faster, they can pass you.

This sounds like another politician wants to be able to say, "I'm going to save you money on gas! VOTE FOR ME AGAIN!!!!!!!"

Idiots.

oh for fuck's sake, how much do i really save by going 55 instead of 70? like 5 mpg? what's that, like 10 bucks a fill-up?

No kidding ... freaking retards! :frown:

I remember 55 mph... it was a time when chicks have more pubes on their snatch than they do on their head.

Their intent is probably to reduce the nation's oil consumption as a whole, not save each individual a few dollars at the pump. Of course, this assumes that people are law abiding citizens and would follow the reduced speed limit for fear of getting caught.

Oh, but it was just temporary. 30 years temporary  Yet another reason the Fed needs to stay the fuck out of people's lives.
