because this medication I'm taking works in the liver to kill the infection

so I can't drink "much"

anyone know how much is still acceptable?

I don't drink much, maybe once in a while with people and get a little buzzed/tipsy but never drunk and puking.

Based on your exact and complete description of both your medical condition and the medication you're taking, you can have exactly 2.3 beers per day.

I wouldn't drink more than 1 or 2 a week. But I really wouldn't drink any...why chance it? Its not like you have to drink booze or something.

BS, according to my calculations he can have 4.2 liters of alcohol a day. (or maybe that is for a 4258 pound man, i dunno, try it and let us know)

Just drink slowly, you'll know when you have to much, see you on the other side.

One of my friends has just recovered from a nasty boil and a heavy infection with staphylococs. He had to be in the hospital for four days, and take antibiotics for two weeks. The doctors told him that drinking would decrease the effect of the antibiotics and might damage his liver. He tried drinking a beer, but halfway through he got so dizzy he couldn't continue.

Those doctors are complete morons, alcohol DOES NOT, i repeat DOES NOT reduce the effect of antibiotics (unless you dissolve the pills in 40+ alcohol before ingesting it.

That is an old wives tale and nothing more.

However, drinking when you are not well isn't going to do you any good as sickness lowers your tolerance and alcohol diminishes your bodys capability to handle the toxins produced by the bateria, it wrecks your immune system that has to work overtime.

Beer is probably fine... just don't drink liquor or whiskey

Oh, I say this because beer is easier to detoxify than liquor and whiskey, but don't go drinking 12 beers in one setting. Perhaps a 30 minute interval; but that ruins the purpose of drinking...So just don't bother.

Tell me, genious, why would a beer be better than a shot of tequila?

Are you sure that you don't trigger a physiological response in the liver, that cause the antibiotics to beeing secreted into the bladder faster?

Beer is easier to detoxify? LMAO, yeah, the alcohol in beer is like this magic kind that is not the same as all other alcohol.

The truth is, all etanol is the same, it doesn't matter where it comes from.

Unless the man has an ulcer, it won't matter from where he gets his alcohol.

Yes i am sure. It won't be metabolized differently and it won't be secreted faster either, it will be absorbed in the same way and it will work the same way.

The thing is that that most people in the medical community can tell you that this is an old wives tale.

The ones who are specialized in the area wouldn't say it and it is a shame every time a medical professional brings up these old tales just because "he heard it".

Would you want to be treated by a man who bases his advice on what he once heard instead of scientific evidence?

Note that i am not saying that it's ok to drink while you are not well, but i AM saying that alcohol in no way, shape or form negatively affects the effects of antibiotics.

I think this is on the same level as the ones who have claimed that OxyContin (and valium for that matter) isn't addictive and that hormonal compunds (the pill) has no long term ill effects. They just don't know what they are talking about.

Antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to treat infectious diseases. In combination with acute alcohol consumption, some antibiotics may cause nausea, vomiting, headache, and possibly convulsions; among these antibiotics are furazolidone (Furoxone), griseofulvin (Grisactin and others), metronidazole (Flagyl), and the antimalarial quinacrine (Atabrine) (7). Isoniazid and rifampin are used together to treat tuberculosis, a disease especially problematic among the elderly (12) and among homeless alcoholics (13). Acute alcohol consumption decreases the availability of isoniazid in the bloodstream, whereas chronic alcohol use decreases the availability of rifampin. In each case, the effectiveness of the medication may be reduced (7).

Why don't you just call your doctor and ask how much is ok to drink?

Don't worry about your liver, that's why you have two.
