I can't decide which Cherry tree to plant!

SagaLore isn't interested in cherries. Instead SagaLore wants the pinkish long rounded wood; you know, the wood that the cherry comes from. I'm certain you don't want a photo of that.

oh so subtle...

I'd get a fruit cherry. They're a little messy in early summer, but the cherries are delicious, and the wildlife dig them also.

which ones are the "tart" cherries? they're supposed to be the best.

Also called sour or pie cherries. They're highly acidic, and deter birds a little bit more than the sweet ones.

The montmorency tart cherry is typically used for homemade pies... *drool*

Since you said cherry tree and not cherry trees, you've limited your choices quite a bit. AFAIK, the sweet cherries need a 2nd tree for pollination. Personally, I'd put in 3 or 4 cherry trees - a couple sweet & a couple tart. Then, 2 or 3 peach trees. And, a couple plum trees. For the hell of it, why not a couple hundred strawberry plants. Oh, and some pear trees, of course.

Sounds like a plan. Have a sunny yard I can borrow? 😛

Cherry trees are notoriously hard to grow. I had a cherry tree growing up. I didn't even realize it was a cherry tree until one year cherries started popping up. They were reddish/yellow in color and super sweet. The next season, the tree died for no explainable reason.

Wouldnt the goats eat all of that?

You put in a good fence and calculate a 30% loss of fruit for the times the goats (inevitably) get through the fence. 😀

i have planted northstar and montromency trees. Plus a whole lot of wild ones I have been told are chokecherries. the mont's make great pies, and a combination of all three makes a great wine.

My cherry wood has such nice marbled grain with dark, nearly crimson veins. Gentle buffing really brings out the rich textures, but there's nothing like it when it's polished to a high gloss.

I would assume that like Apple trees, you can graft a few male limbs onto a female tree, no? Does it not work with Cherry trees for some reason?
