I can't connect to my home computer (RDC) if it's been idle a long time.

I don't know exactly what's going on but this is the deal.

My home computer is setup to recieve RDC connections from the outside. It's 3389 port is open and it works well.

The problem is that if it's been idle for a long time I can't connect to it from my office. My wife (at home) has to for example open IE and go to google or something. Immediatley I can then connect to my computer from work.

I don't know if this is though my ISP or any changes I can make on my router.

I'm using a WRT54G v8.0 router

Is it a matter of using some application that keeps the connection alive?

do you have any kind of power management options set for the NIC? Go into Device Manager > NIC > Power Management and uncheck all options.

I just did that and found that the "Allow computer to shut this device off to save power" box was check.

I unchecked it.

I'm assuming it should work now. I'll check tommorow.

Thank You

Looks like it didn't work.

I have the same problem. I'm going to look in my bios to see if there any power management utilities. I'm also going to see if there are any nic drivers. But the motherboard is quite old. I don't think any further is availible.

Is your net connection setup using PPPoE on the router? If it is, PPPoE may be disconnecting, and not re-initializing until a client uses the computer.

You could always see if you can ping the external IP of the router to check that.

Also you could always setup a program on Windows to keep a connection to the outside world going so that it doesn't drop off, say sign into a chat client or something.
