BAKE for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

mmm that's the recipe we always use (back of bag), and still have some in the cookie jar from the holiday cookie batches... damn they are still tasty as all hell a week later. One fine cookie jar. :)

My wife (journey-level commercial baker) often uses margarine instead of butter (a) it holds it's shape better than butter, (cookies don't spread out so much/fast) and (b) butter burns/browns at a lower temperature than margarine, which, depending on the cookies, can turn them brown before they're actually done. HOWEVER, she still uses butter in MOST of her baking recipes. NEVER the crappy "spread" crap...that's just a bit of oil and lots of water. NOT meant for baking.

And OP, I've used margarine before and they taste just fine. Don't listen to all the margarine haters in here! :p

After failing life, I used ONLY butter the next time. 20 minutes later I am stuffed and content. Victory spoils till I fail at making peppered steak tomorrow!

Indeed, good they are. I've made those, and sugar cookies from a recipe on a bag of flour - and I've once screwed up while making a batch of Cream of Wheat on the stove. Definitely not a master chef.

I always use butter. I had margarine yesterday for the first time in awhile. Yuck.

Got to modify that Toll House recipe though. Too crispy for me. I like cookies to be only a little crispier than cake. :)

i have always used sticks of margarine and not butter to make cookies without any problems. i would say using spread was the problem and i am not sure why everyone in this thread is praising butter when stick margarine works fine for baking.

on a side not, Trader Joe's sells pre cut chocolate chip cookie dough that is supposed to be the shit according to consumer reports.

Indeed. When I make chocolate chip cookies, I use half margarine and half butter flavored Crisco shortening. I've never met anyone who hasn't liked my cookies.
