I agree with Triumph. We live in a capitalist economy and by golly we should all be pro BIG business. In that regard I believe that you should all lose your jobs to the immigrants that are pouring into this country? You say you make $22 an hr? lol, please. Big business can train 3 Mexicans to do your job. Do the math: 3>1. I'd take the 3 immigrants any day.

Thank god I have a nice sizable inheritance coming my way when my uncle passes away. The money that I'm getting will easily sustain me while more middle American's slide into poverty.

what a shame.

You need a crash course in economics. Now.

where do these morons come from

its a supply and demand issue

when demand is > then supply prices go up, just about every refinery is operating at 100%, the issue is they just cant make it fast enough

you say make more refineries, ok fine however that wont solve anything now, 5 years from now maybe nut not now

the real solution to all this is to just nuke china, it is their industrial revolution that is putting the squeeze on oil

Yep. The squeeze is on the global supply due to emerging economies such as China. As long as oil will be in demand, you can expect higher prices at the pump.

hmm, when I was in college the only fuels I bought at the gas station were the alcohol based kind. Which to my knowledge are still pretty cheap.

why the fsck do you live so far away from where you need to be? if you're living that far away you should move! and you know what? people do that when gas prices go higher. people do change their behavior. so while gas prices are inelastic in the short run, when it comes time to move or time to buy a new car, people will conform their behavior, making gas prices elastic over the long run. we learned that lesson in the 70s.

and oil companies make the same % profit that they always did. back in 1998 when they were damn near bankrupt did you want to give them an extra $0.20 a gallon or were you gloating about having $0.75 per gallon gas?

Get a god damn job.

I worked 2 jobs this summer. 88 hours a week. This is because I have a dream. I'm not some lazy god damn bum like this guy. I don't spend untold hours on the computer. How old is this guy? 12?

He makes hard working Americans look bad.

So what is your real argument? That we should be artificially forcing oil companies to lower their prices? That we should start drilling in Alaska? That we should invade more Middle Eastern countries and take control of their oil reserves? How bout just NOT DRIVING SO MUCH instead?

How about those that can't help driving so much (parents of 3 children involved in different extra-curricular activities, people who commute at least an hour to work and others)?

I was just reading the other day about Niagara Mohawk asking for permission to raise the price of electricity the other day (western NY newspaper). Hmmm... I don't see a shortage of electricity here, yet there are price controls. Was your point that they didn't work in the 70's, therefore there possibly couldn't exist any system of price controls for gasoline that would work?

Watch the price of gasoline in the area devastated by the hurricane. I guarantee that if any gas station decided to sell people gas for $10 a gallon, there'd be plenty of people who would be willing to pay it. I think the government calls that "gouging" and we have some laws to curtail it. That is a form of price control.

good job you lot dont live here

lets say $3 for a gallon of petrol .....3.8litres

now thats £1.68247 for 3.8litres

which equals 44pence a litre.....which for us is BLOODY cheep!

at the moment, the safeway up the road is selling 95ron (our regular) unleaded for 90pence a litre. if you lived here thats £3.42 for 1 american gallon

which is about $6 a gallon

Once again, that's all taxes. So yes, I'm glad I live in a country which doesn't feel the need to add enormous taxes on at the pump.

Gouging is a different story. Keeping prices artificially low to the point where the cost of production is more than the cost of selling leads to shortages. The California blackouts a few years ago is another example. California had tried some half-assed free market system that still had centralized price controls for energy. That resulted in shortages.

Walk or ride a bike. Or buy a scooter.

In college I lived in an apartment across the street from the campus commuter lot. It basically went <apartment>--<commuter lot>--<academic buildings>. Some people in my apartment complex would DRIVE TO THE COMMUTER LOT to go to class. Seriously, how stupid can you be? Gas prices are high, yes, but to some people, the thought of changing their habits doesn't even occur to them as an option.

You should have seen my school. Less than a half mile from end to end, and people would drive to class from the dorms even though because of the way the parking lots were arranged they had to walk farther to get from dorm to car and from car to class than if they just walked from dorm to class in the first place.

Per living 30 miles away from work, "so you should move!"
Don't be such a dumbass. Ever considered "I work for firm X and my wife works for firm Y, and they're not across the street from each other."???

My wife has a 25 minute commute to work each day. Maybe she should quit and find a closer job? Let's see... she's a nurse at a hospital... Oh wait! That *is* the closest hospital. Oh, and that's where most of the doctors offices are located as well. Meanwhile, I have either a long walk or a short bike ride to work. I know! Maybe you're suggesting we get divorced and re-marry someone who works at the same place??
/end sarcasm

Another per living 30 miles away from work, "so you should move!"

How much can housing prices differ over a geographic range of 30 miles??? (which often far more than makes up for the costs of fuel)
Oh, I know...
"I live in a more inexpensive area. My company should close down their headquarters and move them closer to my house."

i know fine well its all taxes....but its still more expensive here than there, but then again we dont use as much as the US.

the vast majority of european cars weigh in under 2.0litres, and alot of them are quickly becoming diesel engines (common rail diesel) the two cars on our drive right now are capable of over 40Mpg on a bad day.

ones a ford Ka, the others a Renault Scienic RX-4 with a 1.9 CDi engine

but i hate the government for whacing a 80% tax thats right 80% is the number for Tax on petrol, then they want us to pay road tax, and now theyre trying charge us for actually driving on certain roads.....and i believe there was plans to introduce a pay as you drive scheme, the can go BOLLOCKS the lot of them!
