I've got a wired lan with router, and both comps are running Windows Xp home edition. I have all of my software firewalls turned off but I still find that I can't copy files from comp 2 to one over the network but if I walk over to comp 2 I can send them to 1 over the network, does anyone have any clue what could be going on?

only thing I can think of is that the file/printer sharing isnt enabled. if its not that make totally sure the firewalls are allowing access

The funny thing is synctoy works perfectly, it sync up two diffrent directories on my two computers without any hiccups. I'm looking around and checking my settings, I know printer sharing is on because I can print across the network.

When you say you can't copy the files, what exactly are you trying to do that doesn't work? Can you see the computer on the network and you aren't allowed to write to the other computer or isn't it visible whatsoever?

ya when you share a file I think theres a check box that lets other users make changes to the files. That may need to be checked.

I figured some of it out, When I click on the my network places icon on my desktop, I have to click view workgroup computers then click on the computer I want to acess to be able to freely move files across, other wise if I just open my network places and click on for example, folder "xyz on the desktop computer" I can't copy files. Did that make sense? I have no clue why I have to do that?

are you using simple file sharing or advanced? If you're using advanced, not only do you have to share the folder but you have to give the user who is going to access it permissions in the security settings.

If you map the drive, you have access to it on your local computer.

1. Go to My Network Places.
2. Go to Microsoft Windowns Network
3. Select the PC you want to map the drive on
4. You will see a list of the drives and printers you have shared
5. Right click on the drive and select Map network drive

You have to make sure that all the PCs are in the same workgroup and the drives are shared.

I have triple checked and I don't have the option for advanced networking, I do see where I can map drivers, it's in the menu at the top in the My network folder.
