I can pick up a '04 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 for $7k

I'm really thinking of buying this bike from a co-worker of mine. He's only had it a year, it has 1,500 miles on it, it is always garaged and he's never laid it down. Good deal? Should I jump on it?

This is not a bike I'd ride every day. It would be a fun weekend toy and occassional commuter vehicle.

The V-Strom is supposed to be a great bike, more tourer than sport bit very quick and comfortable. I considered it, but it was a little too much for me money-wise. I went with the Kawasaki Z750S, brand new for $6800. If you know the seller well enough to trust the bikes history, I'd say go for it.

The V-Strom is so ugly! And it doesn't sound like that hot of a deal. If you aren't looking for that specific bike, there's plenty of other bikes out there that'll do the same thing for cheaper. A Kawasaki Concours can handle the curves amazingly well, can ride all day, has huge lockable storage, and can be found for cheap. Oh, and if you don't know how to ride a 1000cc anything is not a good way to learn.
