I buy Wal-Mart Protein shakes...

The brand is Body Fortress. It's also a weight gainer, and provides 24g of protein per serving with around 400 calories. The best part is, its about 12 bucks.

Questions: Is there any difference between Wal-mart brand and a more reputable brand? I'm considering switching to a more expensive protein shake to see if it makes any difference, have you guys had any experience with this matter? My price range is from 20-30, and it has to be a weight gainer, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

edited...body fortress...not team fortress (damn you orange box! :p)

Are you sure you aren't talking about "Body Fortress"? That's what they sell at my local WalMart. It's $12.50 for 2 lbs. IIRC.

I think the stuff is terrible, personally. Their chocolate flavor is the worst I have ever tasted, and the powder itself leaves a gritty sand like layer at the bottom of my shaker bottle after I'm finished.

Try ON 100% Whey Protein. Not only is it cheaper (at least compared to my Walmart), but it also mixes better and tastes MUCH better.

The cheapest place to buy right now is Vitaglo, although see the supplement thread for other recommendations.

Say the truth, you only bought it because it sounded like the game.

If you have a local Vitamin Shoppe around there, I would suggest you either just buy the 5lb Muscle Milk, or 5lb Whey Optimum Protein. They aren't gainers, but the muscle milk is I believe around 380 calories when taken with milk. I believe MM is something like 32g protein, 40ish grams of carbs, and 18ish grams of fat, but I forget. It's a good meal replacement drink and MM tastes the best.

I use this stuff. (Body, not team though...)

Tastes fine on my pallet, and even better when mixed with milk. No residue in my shaker with water, or milk.

Muscle Milk Collegiate is cheaper then regular MM, and is still high on calories. The taste is good enough that I can get my wife to drink two 2-scoop servings a day. I'd recommend two 4-scoop servings a day for a bigger person though.

I personally drink three 4-scoop servings of Cyto Gainer each day which is also in the $20-30 price range. Heres the links to where I buy the two products.

$26 MM - Collegiate

$28 Cyto Gainer

Wal-Mart stuff is fine if you are desperate.

Also you should remember Six Star is the same as Muscle Tech, same ingredients, everything, just their bargain brands that I see at some Wal-Marts, so if you can at least get that.

24G was the protein amount...?

According to the OP it was. I thought the point of a protein shake was to get pure protien.

Um, I thought 1g protein = 4 calories?

Anyway, a lot of those protein drinks will have a bit of carbs and fat in them.

Uh, 400 calories? Something's gotta be wrong with that brand because Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein has 130 calories with 24 g of protein. Either the crap the OP is using is REALLY crappy or he wrote it wrong.

Here guys, I took a picture of my 2lb tub. It's the chocolate of the 'Body Fortress' variety.

link

Yeah, only 100 calories with one scoop, or 200 with two.

Yeah I wasn't saying that my above numbers will give you what the OP said, but I was clarifying Dunbar's error and pointing out that most whey supplements aren't all protein. Didn't mean to suggest anything more than that.

Doh, I didn't mean to quote you actually. I just wanted to say that to the OP. :) Sorry about that.

I finished my bottle already otherwise I would double check how many calories it contained. I have the "weight gainer" version, so its likely it has a lot more calories than yours.

Dude, don't get the "weight gainer" version. They are typically protein shake powder with a bunch of sugar, maltodextrin, dextrose tossed in for calories. You'll gain weight...fat. Make your own gainer that will have more caloires and is almost as easy to make

2 cups skim milk (or whole if you really want to gain)
1 heaping scoop of your powder
1 cup oats
1 tablespoon Extra virgin olive oil

roughly 700 calories, 175 calories protein, 350 calories carb, 175 calories fat

drink 3 of those babies a day plus your normal meals :)

Even though I am a fan of the Cyto brand of products, I decided to purchase a 5-lb. tub of EAS whey protein - each scoop has 23 grams of proteins, 3 grams of carbs, 20 calories from fat.
