I hope you're not planning on moving that thing every day. I bought a 17" laptop and I've flown with it 2 times. That thing was such a pain to lug around that it says home from now on.

Nice setup though :)

Why not buy a MacBook Pro and install Vista on it? Better quality parts, plus you can dboot into MacOSX for everything except gaming.

Get one used off here or ebay, I bought mine used for $1350 off ebay and it was more top of the line than yours (at the time). You are probably looking at $2k ish for that set up, right?

How much do you want to spend?

There are laptops that are just as good for under $2k.

And by the way, the 4GB of RAM - you're either better off upgrading on your own (~$120 if you do it yourself) and the 4GB will be wasted on a 32-bit system as it won't be able to be addressed by the computer.

What is the cost of that Setup?

Are you married to Dell or would you consider other, possibly cheaper options?

What exactly are you planning on doing with the machine?

I got a similar 1720 for $1100 with these differences:

T7250
X3100 video
1GB memory (added 4GB from Newegg for $165)
no mobile broadband card (huge cost, is it really worth it?)
no additional battery

I had a $425 off $1399 coupon.

What is that setup costing you? You can cut a whole lot off by simply adding the memory yourself.

I got an e1705 back in March. I love it. Got an employee discount through my old employer, so i got a sweet deal, something like a $3000 laptop for $2000. My only regret is that I stupidly got the x1400 "graphics card" and not the nvidia. So far, it's been flawless.

I saw a review of the new mobile graphics cards from nvidia. any idea whether i could upgrade mine to one of those, and if so, whether or not that would void my warranty?

I don't understand high end laptops. Aren't laptops supports to be portable? How portable can a system that uses 200 watts when idle be? You're either limited to about an hour of battery life, or you're carrying around 7-8 pounds worth of battery.

I'd thought I'd throw some, you know, facts your way.

http://www.dell.com/downloads/.../environ/Insp_1720.pdf

62.82 watts peak
17.00 watts when idle (testing meets EPA Computer spec 4.0 requirements)

As for the battery, it's a standard 4, 6 or 9 cell Li-Ion battery. It's no lighter or heavier than a comparable 4, 6 or 9 battery from a smaller laptop.
