I bought my parents a 256 mb stick of ram to add to their slow 128 on their slow arse dell system...But the system doesnt really seem to be moving that much faster. Applications and logon are still kinda sluggish. I was hoping for faster speeds. They have norton antivirus and norton internet security running.. and call wave.. thats all.. any help?

What OS? What cpu? Specs?
Plus, you won't see a big speedup with adding more ram. You would see that mainly with a processor upgrade. You should see some improvement when you're doing multi-tasking. Would be better able to answer you based on the specs of the pc, their OS, and what they use the comp for mainly.

I've had the same problem with my sister's emachine. It's the 5400rpm HDD and celeron.

Windows XP runs like molasses on 128MB of ram. Even the start menu lags for a few seconds after clicking it. The Athlon XP 1700+ system downstairs was like this with 128. Now it's fine at 256. Going from 128-256 is like night and day with XP, even in just clicking around the OS.

P4 1.6 Ghz 388 MB of ram. I understand the problem.. They dont have AMD!!!

Anyway, they are running with XP HOME edition...*yuck* andyhoo.. I was just expecting the load menus to be a lot more snappy..but NOOOO.. cant have THAT.. I suppose they would notice while multi tasking, if they knew how. I told them to let me build them one..but they insisted dell. *rolls eyes*

Is it a willamette with PC133?
I bet it has a 5400RPM HDD. That makes the whole OS seem really pokey.

Win XP runs perfectly fine with no visible delays with 128 MB of RAM. I'm using a 800 MHz computer with 128 MB RAM and Win XP Pro right now. Startup menu is up before I can blink - no noticible delay. But you must turn off useless features. Turn off the fast user swapping (saves 64+ MB right there). Turn off the screen saver and any desktop image (save another MB there). Turn off features such as the "slowly fade menus into view". That 3 sec delay is a Windows feature!

A 1.6 P4 shouldn't be having those problems. Run the computer as you would for awhile, then right click on the taskbar, click task manager, click performance, and under Commit charge let us know what is there (all 3 numbers). And under the physical memory what is listed as available? With that information, you should know if you need memory or not.

Do you have anything else running that you don't know about? For example, many cheaper computers come with Microsoft Works. In the photo editor of Works there is an "automatic update" feature that looks for updates everytime you log on to the internet. Guess what, it takes 5 MB of memory to do that and it runs everytime you boot the computer. A simple checkbox switch to turn that off can dramatically give you more resources. Search under the OS forum for "processes" and you'll get links to places that will tell you what all of the processes in the task manager do and if you can remove them.

Exactly which applications are sluggish? Sluggish with applications is often a hard drive issue. It could be a slow drive or a poorly configured drive. It could be just about anything, but we don't quite have enough info.

Good luck, time to head home for the weekend.

Start ---> Run ---> type: regedit

Dramatically improve menu speeds and application and system shutdown/restart speeds

Locate
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

Find and Change to the following settings from default:

HungAppTimeout=5000 Delay before a hung application is allowed to terminate (each 1000 = 1 sec)

WaitToKillAppTimeout=4000 Delay before windows finally starts to shutdown (each 1000 = 1 sec)

MenuShowDelay=50 Delay before a menu pops open. (each 1000 = 1 sec)

AutoEndTasks=1 Automatically closes running applications when Windows shuts down.

For other tweaks that will improve the performance of your system refer HERE
At the bottom of that page you'll have links to various tweaks and use this page to come back and select the ones you want.

If the computer was running win98 or win2k, then 128mb would be fine. I have a P3 win2k machine that runs great on 128mb ram for simple mail and web purposes. I am very well aware of winxp's memory hoarding practice, I know it is strongly recommended that you use a minimum of 256 for xp. You'll notice I asked him to provide details about the computer and the OS.
