Now iMacs are twice as fast. Radeon X1600 graphics too. And built-in iSight.

I was going to get one for my daughter for Christmas (but then the stupid house tax bills and insurance started coming in...gotta wait now).

Anyway, OSX is really good. I mostly want one for the iLife software.

anyone got any links to reviews on the new Intel based iMacs. is the Intel processor really a good performer?

OP, I was this close to buying the G5 iMac until I read something online.

So so far, what practical advantages does the mac have versus PC?

i like how program installations are handled... you just drag the icon from the CD onto the desktop and call it a day. The OS overall has a more solid 'feel' to it, is more customizeable, and seems to handle things more smoothly. When you get down to it, it's just another computer, so you can't really expect it to be too different, application wise, to your PC- just a different way of doing the same things. :)

I saw that, soo tempting. If I could find a 17" with AppleCare 3 year warranty included for $1299 then I'd buy it in a heart beat.

if you don't mind a G5 mac, then

$1299 - $125 rebate plus $169 for Applecare 3 year

equals, not a bad deal.

Thanks but I'd want new hotness not old and busted :)

I've always wanted to try a Mac too but they are kind of useless to me

I already loaded my Gmail notifier, remote desktop client (for remoting into my Windows desktop), MSN messenger, Aim (via IChat), Open Office, Windows Media Player.

Hmm... Were you able get Open Office 2 working with Mac OS 10.4.4 by any chance? I just tried it today, and the application seems to crash before it can open an X11 window.
