I bought a mini less than 2 months ago....sold it already. Great little machine, but to make a more practical/meaningful "switch" i'd have to spend a lot more $$ on Mac h/w (dual G5's).

Not worth it IMHO.

But I sold the mini to a family, who set it up for their daughter to use for school. I'm sure she will get EXCELLENT usage out of that little bad boy.

I already loaded my Gmail notifier, remote desktop client (for remoting into my Windows desktop), MSN messenger, Aim (via IChat), Open Office, Windows Media Player.

well, the tools I use and the games I play don't run on a Mac

I'm holding out until the Apple Powerbooks (12") come out using a new Intel chipset... that'll be sweet!

No one is forcing you to switch over.

I love my Macs, we have a G4 iBook and a G5 iMac. My only dislike is that OSX GPS support is pathetic.

I'm going to buy my mother a Mac Mini for her birthday (end of March). Then I will take her old G4 400 tower to play with and learn OS X.

I'm still feeling my way around some things but pretty much everything is idiot proof. I ditched the apple mouse in favor of my MS Intellimouse explorer (I can't live without my right mouse button) It picked it up with no issues and everything works great. (scroll wheel and thumb buttons). Hooked up to my wireless network in about 10 seconds out of the box.

I'll give a better review once I get to know it a little better

:cookie:'s all around

Google for a program called USB Overdrive. It makes the mousing a LOT more like it is on windows, my only real gripe about OSX is the default mouse acceleration is whacky as hell. I even got my mini to work with my G5 mouse, and the sensitivity buttons work too!:)

So so far, what practical advantages does the mac have versus PC?

It's a perfect thing to give to older people/computer illiterate. It has one mouse button. It's no where as remotely prone to viruses and spyware as a PC. Just about any problem is fixed with a reboot.

It's about as dummy proof as you can get. If I was to get a grandparent their first computer, I'd seriously look at Macs.

So how's sex working for you with only one testicle?

I mean, since it's a Mac, and a newer one, you probably sold your left nut just to buy the thing. :p

With Apple likely unveiling Yonah-powered iMacs, Mac Minis, iBooks, and Powerbooks tomorrow, I wonder if it was wise buying a G5 iMac this late in the game.

It def. is. I've used AIM, Trillain, Gaim, iChat, Adium, and a few other OS X clients, and Adium wins BY FAR. And, it's based off Gaim :).
