I bought an old four wheeler today for 400

SAWYER

The guy was asking 600 but slipped up and let it be known he was desperate for money to fix his truck so I lowballed him! It is an 80's or early 90's Yamaha Moto 4, not sure if it is a 250 or 350. It drive and the plastic is good, definitely worth 400

Interesting they are just called Quad Bikes over here... :hmm:

Well you guys mislabel chips, cookies, biscuits, hoods, and trunks, and have strange spellings for jail and neighbor, so your oddball name for a four wheeler isn't a surprise 😛

how do we misspell jail? (we created the language, you do things wrong)

That was a good quad in its day. Shaft drive, plenty of torque, electric start. Get a helmet, and make sure the brakes are good. Not a bad deal if its mechanically sound, not burning too much oil.

Oddly enough, plenty of quad riders call their rides 'bikes'. A friend asked me why I had referred to it as my bike, and I sorta said "Well, thats kinda what everyone calls them".

It clearly isn't a 'bike' based on my definition, but when in Rome ...

Oh, and to OP - make sure and grease any fittings and dump some Sea Foam into the tank to clean out any dirt or water that may have gotten into the tank as well.

It is hard to start when it is cold, do you think sea foam will help with that?

Doubtful. Are you setting the choke?

Like a used car - you should get all basic maintenance taken care of first, don't assume the previous owner knew anything about it.

Spark plug, charge battery, oil change (make sure you use the right oil if that's a wet clutch, although Yamaha may have a dedicated trans oil) check the hoses, coolant, adjust cables, chain, etc.

Hard to start is not nearly as bad as not starting. A carb rebuild kit on such an old quad is probably a good start. Gas is only good for a few months in a tank, so what I've seen most of the time on older abandoned ATVs are severely gummed up carbs from the gas going bad.
Only way to ''ungunk' it is a rebuild kit to replace the worn out rubber gaskets and gummed up jets.

Edit: ALL carb model ATVs are hard to start if its around freezing. They are all like this. EFI solved the problem, plus allowed the ATV to be used at varying altitudes without needing re-jetted.

Four Wheeler to distinguish it from the Three Wheelers, which were popular and dangerous...

ATCs and quads. thats what we have always called them... my 4-wheeler was my old chevy stepside truck. mainly because a quad isnt necessarily a 4-wheel drive vehicle. back when they all had 3 wheels, we called them ATCs because thats what the shops listed them as
