I bought an alto saxophone yesterday

Chaotic42

Lifer
$200 for a Selmer Bundy II. It's not a great horn or anything, but it's not in disrepair. It could use some cork, but it plays well, unlike me. I forgot how hard it is to get my embouchure up to the task. My high D is sickly... 😉

I'll post pics when I get home. I'm excited!

Nice to hear you have a new (har!) horn. Let us know how the renovation/replaying goes.

/me wishes he had his trumpet.

i also have a bundy sax, what kind is it? alto, tenor, or bari? (if you got a bari for $200 you should put it in brag and moan in hot deals!)

How long did you play? I tried trumpet, but I got the keys confused. The sax keys are easy to remember, even though there are 20 of them.

Ah sorry, it's an Alto. I tried to determine what kind it was over the phone, but the guy had no idea. I was thinking about going tenor, but for $200, this is a great deal. If I decide to get serious, I'll look into a tenor and polish this Bundy up and sell it. I live 1 house down from a music shop (that's going out of business 🙁). They wanted $1200 for a used tenor.

I declined. 🙂

I forgot what size reeds to use, and the guy said that I should use 2 1/2. I don't remember having such big reeds. I think he meant 1 1/2. Now that I look at the box, it says it's for tenor sax.

Oh, well. What size reeds do you use?

For beginners - 2.5 strength reeds. (I still personally use 2.5)
As you get better, move onto 3 strength reeds.

And yes, High D can be a bitch 🙂

I've been playing Alto Sax for 2 years. Fun!

Really? Did you pick it up in school, or just for the hell of it?

School. Picked it up in Grade 8 Band, now going to be in Grade 10 Advanced Band 🙂

I still use the school saxaphones 😀

As for as I know, for concert band, Tenor's get the weakest parts in most songs 😀

Alto is the way to go for concert band type of thing. For Jazz and etc, Tenor is the weapon of choice.

Yeah, I'm going the jazz route. I've played tenor before, but not extensively.

Oh yeah! "Doctor" your reeds. When you get your reeds, keep them in a container of water with a little mouthwash.
It'll make the reed much easier to play with. Just pop the reed back in the container after playing.

I played continuously for eight years, unfortunately I've put it on the back burner for the last two years. Played a little guitar, some euphonium, etc. 'Twas fun.

Cool thing about brass instruments is that it's all about the embouchure - you can play extraordinarily well if you get the lip movements down right.

the size is for alto sax and i prefer hemke reeds , as far as the strentgh goes i used 2 1/2 when playing jazz on my metal mouth piece and 3 on my normal mouth piece.

1 1/2 is too weak, you'd have a really hard time playing that let alone if you can find any one who carrys it.

I started playing the Alto in 8th grade, IIRC. Stopped playing in 10th🙂 Picked it up again, and wow...the fingering is all there, but I just don't have enough in me to play without my mouth fatiguing.

My first sax was a tenor...and yeah...that was too hard.

Currently playing with a 3 reed. Maybe I should step back down to two.

Have fun🙂 I also have a bundy sax...but I paid $1000 for mine, it being brand new.

Any good (free) sheet music links?

It sucks that I can only play at work.

I used to work in a music store. Tell me about it. 😛

Just go to Google, "song name" saxophone sheet music. I used to know a whole bunch of sources, I'll see if I can remember any of them:

Nope, not yet. I'll keep you posted. 😛

Yeah, I live in an apartment, and I'm not so sure if I should try and play. I don't know how loud it's going to be. I can always just drive up to work to practice, but I'll be able to get about 2 or 3 hours of practice 6 days a week. That should hold me over.

Oh, you'll be loud. It's really hard to practice while trying to hold back in fear of someone complaining about the loudness of your sound, but maybe you'll manage 🙂

Can I stick a sock or something in the bell to muffle the sound? As long as I can hear the tone, that will work.
