I bought a video card from a friend, and it doesnt work

I was in the hunt for a video card and a really good friend of mine had one he was willing to part with. He is kind of strapped for cash so I figured I would buy it from him to help both of us out. Long story short, it doesnt work. There is no way to RMA since it is kind of old. I don't know what to do. Do I be an ass and just give it back to him or what? I knew I should have bought it from the egg....

OK...a little clarification. The cards works until I play a game. I tried BF and UT at medium levels, then it pixelates and/or my computer reboots.

I deleted all my old drivers, installed new ones. Tweaked my bios a bit, and now I am going to try beating on it again.

Just got off the phone with the tech support guy. I was ready to do battle. I told him what it was doing and he agreed that it was overheating. They RMA'd it without even asking the serial number. Gotta love that.
 
Be an ass and demand your money back. A real friend would never do that to a friend bro. If he gives you any grief about it at all either A) beat his ass & quit talking to him or B) walk away and quit talking to him.
 
how much money are we talking about...
under $40.00 and he is in a bind... I would right the $$$ off as charity to a friend...


any more than $40.00 i would mention it to him.. if he did not immediately offer a full refund, it would be time to beat azz.

worst case scenario: tell your buddy that the card doesn't work. you could also tell him that he can pay you the money later, or perhaps exchange somethign else for the card.

If it was still WORTH $140 as of right now, then there is no way it's too old for the warranty to be in effect.

What kind of card, and what manufacturer?
 
$140 is a bit more than I'd be willing to write off as a loss to a supposedly good friend, unless I had money to burn myself (relatively speaking, compared to what I have now). I've been screwed over by friends too many times, unfortunately.

I have RMAed through them-very easy to do so, and I suggest you RMA it🙂
 
wait, are you trying to imply that you believe you were ripped off? that your friend purposely sold you a bad video card?

Also, did you bother to first test it out before you bought it? If he showed you it worked in his comp and then you bought it, took it home and it don't work, then maybe you messed it up?

Maybe it just doesn't work on your computer.

Have you even bothered to talk to him about it in a civil manner? You said he was a really really good friend. If he was a really really good friend you wouldn't need to come on to ATOT and ask a bunch of geeks (myself not included) what you should do....

he told me he never gamed on it, so I doubt he would even know. I havent talked to him because I dont want to put any more stress on the guy.

If I RMA through BFG will they require a receipt of some kind?
