I bought a Prelude - $600 cash *UPDATED*

Well, the Conquest is not going to work out for me as a daily driver. It would make an awesome project if I had a driveway and a garage, and a spare car to drive while I was working on it. As it sits, there's too much wrong with it for me to deal with. So, I'll be selling it.

I went out today and bought a 1989 Honda Prelude 2.0 si. It's not great, but not bad either. It has a problem with the idle - it idles really fast when you first start it, and then it rises and falls. Unplugging the IAC valve helps a little, but not much. Gotta fix that, once I figure out what's causing it. And the exhaust is missing, but they gave me a replacement exhaust when I got it, along with a spare front bumper. Brand new BF Goodrich tires on all four corners...you can still see the blue paint on the lettering on a couple of them. Kind of crusty aftermarket wheels. Alpine tape deck, power moon roof. Seems OK, if a bit boring. I couldn't pass it up for what I paid. There was a godawful ricer tip on it, I took that crap off as soon as I was near a wrench 😀.

Anyways, pics:

Right front
Left side (the bad side - note dented front fender)
Dashboard
Back
Seats (in AWESOME shape) 😀
A/C controls, stereo
One of the tires

That is is fairly nice condition. I got an old Sundance (91) with rusting rockers for 200. WIsh I could pick one of those up. How manyu miles does it have?

It's got about 117k on it. Yeah, it's an auto, but it was hard to find a decent deal on a good 5-spd car. It has two "sport shift" modes, whatever that means.

nice clean interior. could use a good wash+polish+clay+wax and a plastic polish+protectant(for extreior) though. and maybe take it to a body repair shop to get the dents out.

Dayum, where are you at where you got such a good deal?

Yep...the pics right there are "as received." I need to clean it up and wax it....possibly look into replacing that front fender, and replace the front bumper. There's a little tear in it you can't see in the pics. I already have another red bumper, in fact - just have to slap it on there.

Why bother?

Long Island, New York. Usually everything around here costs way too much. I was actually expecting it to be really crappy when I went to look at it, but was pleasantly surprised. Has a full tank of gas, too. Motor ran great on the drive home, and everything worked...but the problem that's affecting the idle is screwing up how it runs, too. Acts like a bad TPS sensor, but I don't know. I just have to track down whatever is causing that and it'll be a nice driver.

Great deal... keep doing deals like that from now until you retire, put the amount you save vs. buying a new car into some sort of retirement/savings plan, and you'll retire with a lot of money. (It's odd that so many people never consider that. But, I suppose many people would rather drive around in newer cars. Oh well.) If reliability is an issue, you can always get a spare car to have around, just in case 🙂

Could also be a vacuum leak caused by degraded rubber hose somewhere.

go to automotive forums, IIRC, the idle problem is an easy fix by cleaning out some carbon.

Heh, I've been doing some searching and reading...it looks like it may be easier than that!
I'm going to try this as soon as I have a spare minute. If that doesn't work, another trick is to bleed the cooling system. I might get out of this cheaper than I thought.
