All new technology was and is expensive when it first came out. VHS was just as expensive and so was DVD's. Nothing changes.

true. I've paid more for some VHS than I've ever paid for a BD.

most expensive VHS (that I've owned):
Apocalypse Now Letterbox = $30 D:
Star Wars Limited (LB) set = $150! D:D:

most expensive BD (that I own):
Watchmen Director's Cut+ stuff + stuff: $25 :awe:
BoB set: $35!! in mail, day of release! :awe::awe::awe:

(for comparison, the BoB DVD set that I purchased as a Christmas present LESS THAN one year prior to BD release was $80!! D:)

HD streaming is absolute garbage compared to an actual BD movie. 720p and stereo sound... the sound is the worst part. That isn't to say I don't stream... like every day. I take full advantage of the convenience. But it really isn't comparable. It's not even comparable to cable on demand.

I'm still waiting for Ridley Scott and Cameron to get on the ball and get me a freaking top notch transfer of Alien & Aliens.

well, Netflix streaming is free if you have any netflix account. so...it's free. it's nothing extra. it's free. I don't understand why no one would simply try it out. Yes, much of the video quality is pretty terrible, but their content labeled as "HD" tends to be as good as DVD, if not a wee bit better in some cases. For a free service, I can't imagine anything better than that.

Sure, it doesn't compare to BD at all (especially sound), but I find that I'm using the streaming service through my PS3 more and more. The content is actually quite good if you search. Plus, it's free. I like free.

And I do not support Blockbuster b/c I don't support assholes that support censorship. ;)

I thought netflix has a subscription fee for an account? That's not really free. I use my friends netflix account for streaming from time to time, and unless it's changed in the last few months, their selection was all old b rated movies. Even the new releases were movies that had already been released on HBO. I usually just watch the old SNL comedy series or some kind of stand-up.

Blockbuster is the only decent sized rental store around me, so I don't have much option there. I'm not sure what you mean about censorship, did they block a movie at some point? Everything I've ever wanted has been there. Or do you mean their movies are "clean" versions? I've never had that issue either.

If I'm too lazy to go to the store I just use my cable box on-demand and watch a high def movie on that.

Yeah, but let's be honest, far too many movies don't really warrant a high quality viewing.

And stereo sound has nothing to do with quality. I'd much rather get actual quality audio in stereo than overcompressed garbage surround sound (let alone how stupid it is to push lossless formats and then fuck over the audio by compressing it and all the other crap they do to audio today).

Its not just the audio that they're basically turning to shit either, who cares if its high resolution if they just try to dumb down the visual aspect as well:

This. Streaming options are few and far between here so we don't.

The Star Wars saga is coming out on Blu-ray early next year. Back to the Future in October. I'm happy I have a BD player. My only beef is being unable to rip them easily to my media server.

yes, it's free with an account. the cheapest $9 netflix account will get you full streaming access.

as for content, I've mentioned before that it really depends on what you're looking for. If all you look at is sci-fi, horror, action--then you will only find crap. The indy, foreign, doc, TV series content is quite good, astoundingly good sometimes.

I wish they had HBO production, though. Actually, some New releases have arrived on streaming quite early--District 9 was up a few days after retail release. As was that recent Surrogates movie (not great, but a decent diversion...)

I believe they recently signed some new contract to drastically increase streaming content. So as content as I am now, I'm thinking it's going to be an absolute no-brainer soon.

There is a huge difference between low quality and high quality viewing. Even at the theater if you go from a regular screen to an Imax screen you can see a huge difference, and hear a difference too. There is not one movie made that sounds better in stereo than surround sound.

VUDU does full 1080p streaming, and doesn't charge extra for it. You need at least a 6mb Internet connection for it though.

weird. I've never paid more than $24 for a new release BD. And probably ave. $17/disc. ...and I was pretty much an early adopter. I also have an HD DVD player buried away in my closet. :D

Online or B&M? My wife is strictly B&M for BDs and stuff. Even at WalMart new releases run ~$30...but she hits BestBuy for new BDs, and that runs $35 easy...caveat, I live in Hawaii.

I don't know if it's just your location... but the last BD I bought at BestBuy was Star Trek the day it came out for $22 I think.

I regularly use Netlix and Vudu on my LG player, but Netflix quality doesn't compare to seeing Iron Man and District 9 in 1080p via BRD. Surround sound especially; I love the effects in Iron Man (my favorite movie).

Vudu is closer, though.
Still no replacement for watching documentary series like Planet Earth and Life, which I own and love watching. Plus you usually don't get extras on streaming services.

It was a Samsung Bluray player, I got a good price on it, but have only used it for the Netflix, Blockbuster, and Vudu apps :p

Sony's got to be feeling the sting of winning the format war and realizing it's a dead end.

Stop trolling.

I use mine fairly frequently... although, I prefer my home network just because I can be lazy and not have to get the BR or DVD out of its case :p.

So, I going to buy a Blu-ray player and the discs so I can watch the same movies again but only in HD? No thanks.
