And yes, I realize 2qt is ridiculously small.

I was thinking of making some taco meat. Hamburger + taco seasoning + water = win?

It would cook for ~18 hours, since I would make it tonight and eat it tomorrow after work.

Should be good, no?

18 hours is a long time for hamburger. Leave out the water and cook it for ~4 hours.

I thought that, but.. isn't that the point of a crock pot? lol

I would cook it on low. Shouldn't more cook time = tastier meat, within reason?

typically, I run my crock pot 8 - 10 hrs. not much point in doing it any longer.

What a crock...

If it's only for one, you could make a small roast, a small pot of stew or chili.

Chili FTW. Just might have to pickup a crockpot just for the hell of it. Someone yesterday or the day before posted a recipe for some five alarm chili.

Mother-in-law, after about 3 years of cooking chili her way (with the beans), decided to try mine.

Needless to say it was awesome. And she's converted.

last week i put the following into our crock pot for 6-8 hrs...very tasty!

1lb ground turkey(browned and drained)
1 can chili with beans
1 can kidney beans
1 sliced red pepper
1/2 sliced white onion
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
handful of tortilla chips
then on top lots of shredded cheese(i used cheddar and a mexican shredded blend, probably 2 cups)

man was it tasty.

Long and slow. The meat needs to be falling off your fork. Almost the same as a good pulled pork sandwich. Also, DON'T BUY GROUND MEAT! A lean chuck would be good, or sirloin if you can afford it.
And, like I posted before, if you throw beans into the mix it just is not chili.

Yup, the meat should have all of the moisture you need. Also, the longest you really want to run it is the amount of time you'll be out at work. 8-10 hours is usually good.

Try a roast though, I'd go buy the smallest one you can find for that sized pot. Even then you may want to cut it in half. My wife did a 2.5 lb roast for us a few days ago. She tossed in 2 sweet potatoes, 2 carrots and 2 parsnips, all peeled and cut into bite sized cubes. Also, she put in a small can of tomato sauce and bottle of beer. She cooked it for about 6 hours, then about an hour before it was done she added some salt, a bit of minced onions and some herbes de provence. If you don't have herbes de provence you can use some dried rosemary, oregano and thyme. It was amazingly tasty.

No. You can brown ground beef and add taco seasoning in under 5 minutes, that's not the kind of thing you do in a crock pot. Crock pots are for things that take a while to cook or for things that can benefit from long slow cooking. They're great for stews, roasts, pork chops, even soups if you're using tough cuts of meat. There is nothing a crock pot can do to ground beef in 18 hours that a skillet can't accomplish in minutes.

Slow cooking unleashes flavor, but if all you're slow cooking is ground beef with taco seasoning, there's not much inherent flavor to unleash, so 18 hours is a tad overkill. Try taking a some beef chuck or a tri tip and toss in a bunch of whatever you feel like, set it for 18 hours and come back to some tender ass flavorful meat.

I don't think the meat is going to be super tender or anything like that, but.. you could say the same thing for any meat sauce, and that's simply not true.

By slow cooking you let all the flavors mingle much more readily. That has always bothered me about making taco meat in a skillet. I've always added a bit more water and let it cook down for a while instead of making it quickly.

I think it would be really good out of a crock pot, and there are plenty of recipes online for doing just that.
