Starting tomorrow new users will be forced to get tiered plans and they wont be reasonably priced either.

How convenient, and ad for VZW @ the top of the page. I'm grandfathered in thankfully. $80 for 10gb, who the hell does VZW think they are?

They think they have the best network and can charge pretty much whatever they want. I'm guessing they are right. Only options are to go to Sprint which some will for true unlimited, but I think more will still go with Verizon due to Sprints reputation. T-Mobile gives you more but is hamstrung by coverage.

One of the last 3 (2 really giant?) major mobile networks. Why bother competing when you can just share in the pillaging.

Just to be clear, if we have unlimited 3G now then we can get unlimited 4G for the same price for the forseeable future?

I stopped at a VZW store last night after work and was talking to a rep, who might be the most utterly useless employee I encountered at VZW ever, about the move to tiered data. First he refused to confirm the date of the 7th (even though VZW has announced it officially is happening the 7th), then he couldn't tell me if it would be grandfathered in, then he said that the pricing might not be the same if I am grandfathered in, and finally goes, "well if you're worried about it then you should upgrade now." Thanks dude, but that's not why I'm here. I'm here to determine if upgrading now is required or if I can hold off like I would prefer to do.

Today talked to a rep with VZW over the phone, and they were slightly more helpful. They did NOT have any info if there would be a pricing change or not though by moving to 4G from the 3G. However, as long as you have unlimited data (and don't remove it from the line) then you will be able to keep unlimited data indefinitely as of today.

unlimited should stay as the plan you are in is grandfathered as a data plan not to being 3g

so I was told.

put my wife on a driod phone on friday night with unlimited(but just a 3g phone for now)

My understanding is if you are unlimited 3g now, adding 4g after the deadline will kill your unlimited 3g and you will now be in the tiered bracket.

My understanding is that it will not do this, if you upgrade to a 4g phone you'll still be on the same data plan (unlimited).

The Verizon rep I just spoke to told me that if you do any kind of upgrade, you lose your unlimited data. So essentially the only way to get a new phone and keep unlimited data is to buy it at retail or 2nd hand (ebay, craigslist, etc.). If true, that really sucks.

Heh, I'm hoping they kill my contract for using 34 gigs last month so I can get a Virgin Mobile phone without an ETF

Wrong. I read on a MAJOR news site, dont remember if it was CNN or what, but even if you upgrade your handset after today, and already have unlimited, YOU KEEP IT.

As far as when you get a 4g device, that I do not know.

Nobody except Verizon knows what will happen when you go to upgrade from 3G to 4G. It has been rumored from some claimed employees that they are combining the 3G, 4G, and BB data codes into one single unified data code. But, 4G has a sim card so it is different in some way inherently. I imagine we'll find out for sure when the Bionic comes out and folks go to upgrade to it. Personally, it doesn't really matter to me. 4G isn't available here and I plan on getting an iPhone 5 which I seriously doubt will have 4G. By the time that contract is up I feel pretty certain unlimited is going to be pushed out completely.

Thing is, sooner or later, we'll all loose unlimited data

VERY likely yes. almost a certainty

yeah well I spoke to two different ones who said that you are grandfathered to unlimited until you ditch data

so THERE! :awe:

Yeah I never really understood what they meant by "upgrade" cuz it really means get a new phone with a subsidy because of a new 2 year contract. Thats not upgrading thats being milked with no downtime in your teats.

Just a few more hours until the store closes.
I really do want unlimited data, but right now they only have one WP7 device and it stinks. And theres no promise of good Windows phones in the future.

CRAP!

I placed an order for a droid 2 from amazon wireless, it said I was approved by verizon for service, and picked out a plan. Does that mean I get the unlimited data? Or does the phone need to be activated by today? I'm not scheduled to receive the phone till Monday.

You should be fine. It goes by when the service/account is started(i.e. the start of the contract) and approved not when the actual phone is activated.

Guys, I've got a number of tweets in my feed that have been retweeted 100+ times, stating that Verizon stores in major cities have lines out the door.

"Verizon is experience usually high call volume right now." I wonder why...

Clearly today was a great day to upgrade mom's phone to a smartphone.
