I believe crysis warhead DRM has rendered my DVD burners useless

could DRM update the firmware on dvd drives?

i even reformatted/re-installed winxp and still cant copy. i could burn anything before the install, now i cant burn jack, i'm pissed. it'll burn the image to the hard disk but then when it goes to copy it just sits there and does nothing, literally. this is BS of the highest order, i cant believe there arent any lawsuits for this DRM bullsh*t

anyone know anyway to get around it, like a dvd firmware update?

this is SUCH BS its unbelievable.

looking at your sig (which is annoying. please delete the extra pagebreaks), i don't see what optical drive you have. please post the exact model plus firmware version.

Haven't really heard anything on DRM bricking drives(firmware wise), maybe your drive just happened to fail at the time? Try the firmware update, and also test out the drive on another computer.

Instead of saying sensible things like "You should have purchased it on Steam, then" and "Maybe it's just a coincidence, check other forums and try the drive in another PC before making such outrageous statements", I'm instead going to address the more pressing issue that affects us all: your sig.

Firstly, take the unnecessary line breaks out of your sig, it makes your post about twice as long as it should be.
Secondly, listing your souped-up rigs in your sig is completely unnecessary, link to your My AnandTech System Rig profile page instead, that's what it's there for.

ok, one of the burners is an LG GGW-H20L blu-ray burner and the other is a plextor PX-755SA SATA DVD burner. its definitely the DRM cause both wrote fine before the warhead install. i can write data to the disks but cannot COPY a dvd now just like i could before last week. i know its not the drives, since i can still write data to disks.

what i did before was use anydvd and make backups of my pride dvds, but now, it'll write the image to the disk like usual, but when it goes to burn, it never starts burning. the burn progress meter never starts, and stays at zero.

its exactly the same with both burners, and using 5 different types of dvd burning software.

i believe the DRM jacked the firmware on both drives so it cant copy ANY dvds. EA is already in a class action lawsuit over this, the same company that produced spore and crysis warhead.

this IS BS to the core, NO COMPANY HAS ANY RIGHT TO MODIFY SOMEONE ELSE'S HARDWARE.

I have Crysis Warhead loaded and I'm nurning DVDs just fine thank you very much. I'm not saying that you don't have an issue, but I'm running Vista 64 with Elby's DVD copy software and slysoft. I've even burned in the background while running the game at the same time.

I just want to say that I love nurning things.

My house nurned to the ground after I installed Crysis Warhead 🙁.

Google reveals a lot of people complaining about the activation limit with the store-bought version of the game, much like Spore was brought up to, but no results indicating any untoward spyware, rootkit or rogue services issues related to it.

interesting.

i have another pc i can try to burn a dvd with, or i can swap the drives and try it that way. its just really odd that all of a sudden i cant copy anything, when a week ago i could copy fine. its the copying part thats borked, the drives read fine and write data fine.

thanks, but this is a brand new install and i dont even have crysis warhead installed right now, i wasnt taking any more chances with EA and their draconian DRM BS.

The fact that just the copying and nothing else is broken does smack of a starforce-esque affliction, though. Perhaps try another type of thing that is usually affected; iso mounting software for virtual drives like Daemon Tools. Can you use that?

Edit: And unfortunately it's so hard to effectively boycott EA given their strategy of buying up any good small companies (look at Crytek for example) so you miss out on a lot of good previously independent software houses 🙁.

lol paranoid
drm as bad as it is won't jack dvd firmware, that is an absurd notion.
you might as well claim it flashed your m/b bios.

Ehh...a rational correlation suggesting causation is "I burned a disc five minutes before installing Crysis Warhead, and it won't burn discs five minutes after installing Crysis Warhead."

A rational correlation suggesting causation is not "The drive burned discs as much as one week prior, but I discovered that it doesn't burn at some point after."

It sounds like you don't even know whether the drives were working two days prior to installing Warhammer.

the drives were working fine a few days before the DRM install. 2 days ago i tried to copy a dvd and it hangs at the point of where its going to start burning a disk.

there was nothing i do/did differently in burning methods.
