What you should have done: Break into the car parked in front of you, put into Neutral, roll it back into the damaged car.

I had the exact same damage before, it's like $2-3k insurance maybe $1500 cash.

Also hopefully agentbolt is right b/c I'd just as soon not be blacklisted from anything at the ripe old age of 22, lol.

zin, nope it definitely happened a few hours ago :p And I didn't break anything on the U-Haul. The huge, huge bumper made sure of that. Yeah I left name/phone#/inadequate apology. If the owner doesn't call, I'll go back over there tomorrow and try to find him/her or like post a sign on the apartment doorway.

Edit: I don't have Geico, lol. I'm covered by Amica. I hope you're right about the $600, b/c the other calls of like $2000 are worrying me. Don't think I hit the radiator. The damage seems to be exterior only.

eh, the other estimates are probably more accurate than mine. I tend to get lucky...or try to find someone that can give me a great deal, but that's a YMMV issue.

I actually didn't see that it was the hood that you dented in the first pic. I'd say minimum 1k, and you may able to find some kind soul to do that for you. here's the role you play:
1. penurous college student
2. going off of insurance
3. honest mistake with UHaul.

try to find a mom and pop operation. they eat that shit up.

Unfortunately, it's not his car. He doesn't get to choose the repair shop. :(

Does your insurance even cover you while driving a U-Haul? I thought most do not unless you pay extra? Did you get insurance with uhaul? Most CC's only cover car rentals, not moving trucks so I doubt that will help either.

Replace plastic bits and paintless dent repair should fix the hood. Had a similar problem with an Altima hood. $700.

Well, interestingly enough, when I was a college student someone hit my friends call while I was trying to move *out* of the dorms with a U-Haul... Not only did the guy w/ the U-Haul have to pay for damages but he was banned from renting U-hauls FOR LIFE. He was also put on a blacklist that rental companies use to decide how much to charge you for rentals (if they decide to rent to you at all!). A buddy that worked at enterprise told me that they regularly charge 50 to 70 percent more to people on the blacklist and it takes seven years to fall off it... sucks man

Also, I drive the same car as the car you damaged... Weird.

Sounds like your buddy is pulling your legs, or it's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

why would it be a lawsuit? you get ina wreck with one of there trucks they can stop you from renting them anymore. They are now a proven risk.

U-Haul is a temporary substitute auto, his insurance will cover it.

I work at U-Haul and that is a bunch of shit. Unless he gave serious attitude and was violent and lied about damages and wouldn't pay for any, this would never happen. We do not contact other rental companies about rentals, we don't care about other companies, why should we put more money in their pocket.

We don't care if they get in an accident either way, we get payed and make money off of it. Even scratching the decals is between $30-$100 depending on which you damage and how large of a scratch. If you got our insurance, you have nothing to worry about, but if you didn't and don't report the accident to us as well as the owner of the car, it is considered a hit and run and charges could be put in place. We will find out from the owner of the car what happened and probably get yelled at by the person for not making you take insurance and for us to pay it.

U-Haul is a temporary substitute auto, his insurance will cover it.

That also depends on what insurance policy you have. In Minnesota, full coverage covers any motor vehicle under 26,000lb and is required by every insurance policy, but depending on where he lives and what insurance policy he has, it may not cover it.

The only problem with this theory is that it is not his car and he doesn't decide what work is performed. Who in God's name is going to opt for "paintless dent repair" over simply getting a new hood and bumper when it is going to cost them nothing either way? The guy smashed into someone's car while they weren't there; they aren't going to be OK with trying to cheap out some MacGyver solution with matchsticks and toothpaste.

OP: Good luck. I'd let insurance handle it, personally. You don't know who you'll be dealing with on the other end (the owner could easily be a prick trying to screw you), and you're easily looking at damages over $1,500. $200 for the hood, $200 for the grille, $200 for the fender, $150 for the headlight casing... you're already at $750 just for parts without any installation or the cost of painting them to match the rest of the car (and dealership shops tend to overrepresent the cost of these items, so that could drive the price up further).

I hope you took out U-Haul's insurance which I believe the top tier would cover you for this (there are two tiers).

I hope you're covered somehow. I did the same thing driving one of the larger Budget rental trucks a couple years ago and because of the size my insurance would not cover the damage. The rental place assured me that they would. On another note, don't drive a truck someone else rents, and if you have to make sure they buy insurance.

I didn't get U-Haul's insurance. Parents always told me not to get rental insurance b/c our regular policy covers it. Sounds like many of you here would disagree with that advice. I haven't contacted U-Haul yet b/c I don't have my receipt with contract # (as asked for on the website) with me. A friend has it so I'll call U-Haul as soon as I get that back.

Also, the guy contacted me. Said the body shop he uses estimates 1200-1600. I actually know him--he's the real estate agent that set me up with the apartment I was moving into. Fail.

If you paid with a CC, that might also provide some form of auto insurance.

Well that is what I thought too... then I re-read the CC document, and apparently I failed at reading the first time. They only cover vans that are designed & used to carry 8 or less passengers. I read the document before, and somehow I remember cargo vans being covered too. Doh.

Anyway the CC is out.

Edit: it's a Chase Freedom card in case someone thinks I should call & try to claim anyway, lol.

sounds like a fair estimate. could have gone higher depending on how shady the garage was.

With UHaul's insurance, your premium doesn't go up if you have a problem but you'll have to probably pay a deductible. I donno when it comes to property damage as the only thing I ever did to a uhaul was mess up one of those aluminum side cap thingies ($400 to replace it too... had to pay $100 deductible). Good thing I took out the insurance :p.

Yea CC's cover cars/small vans but not moving trucks unless it is a special card for that. I always use my CC when I rent a car that has that listed as a feature. But i think most cover cars now.

~1200-1600 for that damage (front hood, grill and paint) is very reasonable. If I were you, I would negotiate with the car owner and pay ~1000-1200 and get a waiver of liability document signed (some proof that you paid for damages).

Going to insurance will cost you your deductible + higher insurance rates.

Deductible is for damage to your vehicle. He would not have to pay the deductible to cover damage to someone else's vehicle.

His rates would definitely go up though.
