So I'm getting the new Droid X which will be my first smartphone. I know it's probably a nub question but why do people use wifi with their cell phone if they have a data plan for unlimited data over 3G?

I have a wired network right now but I was thinking of getting a wireless LAN then use that when I'm at home with the cellphone. But then I thought, why bother if the data plan of the cell carrier covers that?

I'd actually like to do the opposite and get rid of the cable internet I have now and tether off the cell phone for the desktop but somehow I think they won't let you do that will they?

For the iPhone, there is an app size cap on 3G, anything larger than 20MB on the App Store needs the wifi.

Also, somethings run better on wifi, I believe that by unlimited, Verizon really means 5GB, and what if you want to use your phone as a mobile hotspot?

This, plus wifi is a LOT faster than 3G. Seriously... it's a pretty big difference. Plus now with AT&Ts new data plans, I'm able to lower my data package to $15/mo for 200mb which is plenty as I use wifi so much. There truly is no reason to me to use 3G if I can use wifi.

wifi is much faster than 3G

wifi works better for the internet, 3G for most apps

tethering is great for when you are in a pinch, wouldn't recommend it for daily web cruising

I'll agree with the AT&T Tiered plan when 200mb is less than 5$.

Wifi is faster and if your in a building with low/poor service due to location etc wifi fixes the signal problem. I don't use it a lot but it is very helpful having the option

Cool, thanks for the info. So I guess I'll be in the market for a wifi router. I'll head over to peripherals or networking forum for a suggestion on which one.
