That would've been impressive for you to see it 35 years ago, considering it came out 30 years ago.

I'm with you. It didn't work for me. I went and bought the DVD maybe 7-8 years ago, was pretty disappointed and haven't watched it since. It's gathering dust on my shelf. :\

After re-watching ET and Close Encounter of the 3rd Kind within the last couple years, I'd have to say that neither aged well at all. They were definitely a product of their time. Given the context of both movies, I'm sure it was a big deal back then to have a non-evil alien from outer space as a premise. It just doesn't work anymore. However, Alien, a movie which exemplify the evil alien(s) intent on horror to human, still remains a great movie.

I actually think it's one of Spielberg's better films. It might not play well with the modern ADD generation though. It has things like character development, etc.

This.

From my childhood, I can point to two films that when I watch them, I can tell I am watching a classic and an all-time great film: E.T. and The Empire Strikes Back. If you were a kid in the early 80s and ET doesn't remind you how awesome it was to be a kid back then, you have something wrong. 😀

Et is great but I think if you missed it back in the 80s it probably doesn't work well now.

I recently watched the blu-ray version and was shocked at how it actually DOES work well even today.
