meh whatever. kids got bored and went to watch spongebob in another room. the grinch cartoon that we grew up on is on ABC now. guess they'll be forced to watch this with me

I'm with you. It didn't work for me. I went and bought the DVD maybe 7-8 years ago, was pretty disappointed and haven't watched it since. It's gathering dust on my shelf. :\

After re-watching ET and Close Encounter of the 3rd Kind within the last couple years, I'd have to say that neither aged well at all. They were definitely a product of their time. Given the context of both movies, I'm sure it was a big deal back then to have a non-evil alien from outer space as a premise. It just doesn't work anymore. However, Alien, a movie which exemplify the evil alien(s) intent on horror to human, still remains a great movie.

I actually think it's one of Spielberg's better films. It might not play well with the modern ADD generation though. It has things like character development, etc.

From my childhood, I can point to two films that when I watch them, I can tell I am watching a classic and an all-time great film: E.T. and The Empire Strikes Back. If you were a kid in the early 80s and ET doesn't remind you how awesome it was to be a kid back then, you have something wrong.

Et is great but I think if you missed it back in the 80s it probably doesn't work well now.

I recently watched the blu-ray version and was shocked at how it actually DOES work well even today.

Fortunately, he didn't do that nonsense on the blu-ray version. I wish Lucas would respond as positively to criticism.
