I am upgrading my laptop processor (help).......

It's a Compaq Presario 1500T with the mobile celeron 1.4. I need to replace the rear fan in the unit so while I have it apart I am putting my desktop p4 2.0A in it. Should I put any (arctic silver) between the processor and the heat spreader? Or should I just install the heat spreader without worrying about it? I haven't taken it apart yet so I don't know if there is any silver between the processor and heat spreader already? Thanks in advance

Haven't seen a desktop P4 in person, however from what I can gather from photos of the socket and what I've seen in my Inspiron, it looks like it would fit. Now it being BIOS and electrically compatible is another thing. If it does in fact work, definitely put Artic Silver on the core. That was one of the first things I did with my laptop. There was a sh!tty thermal pad on there that wasn't the greatest for cooling.

I know there are mobile p4 processors that have the same 478 pins as the desktop version. I am 99% sure this is what mine has. Considering the price drops I can get a p4 2.2a-m for like $210. But I'm too cheap to shell out money.

Well, I ended up putting a Mobile P4 2.2-m in the laptop. It gets hot as hell now! To the point where it actually is too hot to put your hand on the bottom of the laptop. I am considering taking it apart again and redoing the paste. I know it's a faster processor and will produce more heat, but it's just a little too hot. Any recommendations on a good paste? I hear Arctic Silver is good? Plese let me know.

EDIT: BTW there was no paste between the processor and the heat spreader, there was just the square black film between them. Should I completely clean out the film from the heat spreader? Thanks in advance.

I would be worried that the fan and heatsink aren't sufficient for that fast a processor. Does the fan stay on ALL the time now that you've got that 2.2 in there? I would completely clean off the film to get the best contact between the processor and the heatsink.

Thanks for the reply. Since I play a lor of games rhe fan stays on but I can tell it is at different speeds. So it seems to be ok. But it doesn't stay on all the time when I am doing regular web browsing, word processing...etc. The laptop was originally sold with the option to have a p4 2.2m in it. I am going to take it apart again today and completely clean off the black film square, I will keep you guys posted. BTW I have some cheap RadioShack paste to put between the CPU and heat spreader. Do you think this paste is good enough? Thanks again.

I would put some arctic silver 3 on it. I don't trust that radio shack stuff.

Hello again guys. For the hell of it I put back the original Celeron 1.4 back in it. It still gets overly hot?!?! I am going to try the new processor again without the paste. Maybe direct contact with the heat spreader is the way to go? I will let you guys know the details.

Put the P4 2.2m back in the laptop without the paste. Now it is running cool again!? The processor is now directly touching the heat spreader. Guess you can't put paste in a laptop?! Now it only gets "warm" to the touch. Weird! Hopefully this info will help other Compaq 1500T owners.

One more thing, the desktop P4 processor didn't work in my laptop. I guess it's my model with the Radeon 7500. My freind has the newer 1500 model with the Radeon IGP and the desktop P4 processor works in his. So just wanted to add that info.

Well, I would have to say that removing the black square from the heat spreader is a good thing. That black square is supposed to be a thermal transfer device to pull heat away from the CPU and pass it on to the spreader. However, I would definitely get Arctic Silver III or its equivalent and place a very thin layer between the CPU and the heat spreader. You DON'T want your spreader to be only "warm to the touch". If it's only warm, that means that the majority of the heat is being trapped on the CPU die which is obviously bad. You WANT that heat spreader to get hot. If the heat spreader is hot that means it's doing its job of removing heat from the CPU.
