I am transferring myself and all my friends to AOL Active Virus Shield

I've been using Symantec 10.1 but am looking for something that uses a little less memory, my friends have all been using various semi-effective methods, like Norton, PC-Cillin, etc. Slowly I am transferring everyone who asks me for computer/anti-virus assistance to AOL Active Virus Shield. Free and the BEST detection rates on the market, provided by Kaspersky of course. Just stripped of a few features non-show-stopping features.

Is there any reason not to be doing this? Are you doing this as well? And, why would AOL offer this?

Already done. Active Virus shield is on all of my non Vista computers.

Kaspersky already has one, they are just not handing over to AOL yet.

Wow if they didn't give it to them for like a year or something that would totally blow. If it's not out by May which anti-virus should I get for Vista? Just pay for the K?

In that case I don't know if I'll switch since I get Symantec 10.1 for free and it's not that bad. But it does say the Vista version is coming soon so that could be by May.

I've got AVS and it's definitely a great anti-virus. I keep it as insurance because I never get detections anyways... 😉

I know - I don't get this especially on a tech forum. AV is for n00b's. 😛

Granted we have strict cleaning with hardware on what comes in from the outside but still.

agree, but forums liike this are a good place for noob's to learn

i havnt used any kind of AV?AS or BS softs in years, the #1 security tool is the person operating the computer

A very valid point----but one is crazy if you think thats the only place on the internet where you can get infected---and even totally legitimate sites can get hacked and become
super dangers in themselves to any that visit. An active AV often can and will sound the warning and also block the virus or trojan from installing.

And the computer operator---no matter how safe or security conscientious they are---can't possibly understand or monitor what their computer is doing in following the orders of some unknown piece of malware they happened to stumble across accidentally.---maybe some process control they have running might save their butt---or a software restriction policy on a non-administrative account---but anyone without an active AV is playing a very dangerous game and skating on very thin ice.

Same here. I'm very impressed with this software and am considering buying full versions of Kaspersky for all my family's computers.

no matter what security app you use or dont use, there are simple rules that will protect you from yourself.
1 never keep personal/sensitive information on your pc
2 always keep copies of saved files on a seperate usb hard disk or flashdrive, many backup apps do this for you.
3 always keep an image of your internal hard drive.
4 if you insist on being a thief or monkeyphreak i suggest to use an old or cheap pc to visit porn and shady warez sites.

while i personally havnt seen any malware on my machine in over 4 years, if anything happened be it corruption,virus or whatever, i have it back in 5 minutes using acronis trueimage (currently using vista image now)

nod32 or kaspersky is good. didnt try aol, but its probably one (if not the) best free antivirus out there.

im using nod32 though.

I havent gotten a virus since installing it (around 1 year ago), but then again, i never got a virus when I was using norton ( 😱 ) either 🙂

Nod32 claims to have the least impact on performance of any product. I'm using it, but I'm also using Eudora mail client, and Nod32 only scans Outlook.
