I think you should forbid your roomate from touching the mail. You'll do it when you get home and give him his mail then. If he doesn't wait break his hands.

get a po box, and have everything sent to there. that's the only way you can guarantee getting your own mail...

I'm sorry you don't get the title. You screwed up, had some bad luck, you'll work through it and it will cost you a few bucks. You'll come out of it fine and will have learned something.

However, read almost any of the YAGT threads and you'll find a lot of people who are clearly irredeemable dumbasses for life.

Get your own mail. That would solve everything, forever.

Seriously... just tell him to quit touching your $#!T and you can take responsibility for further stupidity with a clear conscience.

There are three words that I live by, and they have served me well. They are....

COVER YOUR ASS

No one else will do it for you.

it seems to me like alot of things you did added up at once and bit you in the keister. You weren't paying attention while driving, you knew roomate was losing mail and did not take action to circumvent this, you didn't pay your insurance (Because you were paying another bill from another mistake), and you were WAYYYYY to lax-a-daisy in getting information. If it were me, I would have had the police there, fire dept there, witnesses, etc.

Take this as a lesson. In the future, on important bills, like insurance, try to get ahead in payments. Work on getting a "Bill Reserve" so if you are short on cash one payday, you have some $$$ to pay important stuff. NEVER anticipate what a driver is going to do, but try to plan what you wouldn't think he would EVER do. Always leave a way out. Also, when you get in a accident, ALWAYS get as many people involved as possible, and never ever ever ever skip your insurance payment, especially with how sue happy people are anymore.

my bills are automatically withdrawn from my checking acct for me and paid out to whoever I owe money to by my bank...maybe you should ask your bank if they do that?

Too tired to read the whole thread..

Had they sent you the final notice thing? The one with the your insurance will be cancled at such and such a time for nonpayment? Even then, there is usually a grace period on the lapse in insurance thing.

Even if not, talk to your agent, if you've been a longtime customer they may be able to work it out for you. You pay the late payment for insurance and they'll pay the claim and rape you in your next premium.

Yes, but this wouldn't solve the problem of him having to renew the policy. Mine auto-withdraws too, but after 6 months, the renewal doesn't happen automagically.

I got canned from my last job. The reason why, which I will not go into, is why I feel I should earn that title. I mean come on, who wants to screw up a good college job where you get paid vacation, sick time, and a bonus check of at least 2% of what you made the previous year?

You think those wet-backs are gonna sue you?
Doubtful. The probably don't even have the papers to legally show up in court, much less the money to hire a lawyer and get you served. (Not to be stero-typing or anything)
I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully they won't take any action.

First, I'm sure this will work out without major repercussions. Don't let it freak you out.

I would be going ballistic on my roommate if it were me. Totally, unquestionably ballistic. That bill probably arrived at least three weeks ago. Where the heck would he have been able to stash it for that amount of time? If you and he had discussed the mail problem before, I would tell him that you are going to sue him for whatever it costs you to settle the accident because he tampered with your mail which is a felony.

Of course, you can't really sue him for that, but if it scares him enough to give you your mail in the future, it might be worth it.

Wetbacks? Fvck you! :|

beautiful ray of sunshine ---> Someone who swam across the Rio Grande River to get here...

I would not have give them my information if they could not produce their own insurance information.
If a COP was involved me would make sure that both parties exchanged information.
If he doesn't have insurance he shouldn't have been on the road to begin with.
If he rear-ended the Mailbu it is his fault, not yours.

First, I would stop freaking out about it. Much worse things could have happened, in the grand scheme of things this is minor.

Second, I would get your insurance re-instated ASAP.

Third, fix the mail situation. Permanently.

(insert beer here)

Fourth, build yourself some reserve cash. It's very nice not having to worry paycheck to paycheck, & it doesn't require all that much to accomplish that.

If that civic changed lanes in front of you that fast, wouldn't it have been the civic's fault that you rear ended it? I know that 99.9% of the time rear end accidents are the person who rear ended the car, but when someone pulls into a narrow space like that and slams on the brakes, then the fault lies in the car in front afik
