How'd it go?

Well, I'm using getdataback and it's not showing anything on it. When I go to the recovery tree, I see the names of some of my old files in the log window, but I see that getdataback isn't indexing them.

Try a few recovery softwares. I know that the first one that I used gave me nothing. 2nd one just gave me filenames but couldnt recover anything

The 3rd one that I tried recovered everything (some files were corrupted) but I was able to recover ~98% of my stuff. (now only if I can remember the name of that program...it was ~4-5 yrs ago)

I did that once... many, many years ago. I've since decided to take critical drives offline while doing stuff like that. ;)

Dang that sucks, good thing I reformat every 6 months so at least I have a backup/archive.

That's why I back up to an external drive. No chance of that getting overwritten by a reinstall of Windows or something like that.

You should be okay. It was your backup HD, so that means the files should still be on a main drive right?

damn, recover my files won't recover anything with the shareware version. I did see some of my files there though, so I'm hopeful.

Well, I definitely feel for you (because I've done it before), but maybe you'll take more care to ensure that the data you really want to keep is properly backed up now. One copy of the data stored close to you and one copy which is kept off site.

If there was anything that you desperately need to get back (family pics, etc), there are places that will (most likely) be able to get your data back. It's expensive though.

Hopefully it was just a bunch of downloads that can be replaced though.

It's not that important to me. Everything I had on the HD was download and can be replaced. It would just be extremely time-consuming to replace it all.

I found a different version of recover my files and it looks like it might work out for me. I also have the Winternals Admin Pak in case I have to use that as well.

I've had a few hard drives die in the past. I got a DDS4 drive and now I back up to tape AND dvd. I don't trust dvds completely though, I have a few discs that I burned a long time ago that are unreadable.

I've done that before and like others it was years ago and I can't remember the name. Actually did it twice and luckily my fiancee had a copy of all my MP3s on her HD also.

Enermax PSU I had hiccupped, and dropped two of the drives. This was quite some time ago, but it still pisses me off. I also had everything backed up on DVD, but out of ~48 DVDz, I recovered about 5gb. I will never use optical media as primary backup again. After that, I switched my machine to a dual PSU setup (not redundant, just dual), with one Seasonic S12 600w and one Seasonic S12 500w.

This was part of a two day chat I had with a friend about his dying HDD (It was really a bad reg file). He lost EVERYTHING he had.

Him: I hate my computer
Me: deja vu.
Him: hdd is toast.
Him: had to replace it and start over.
Me: How do you mean "toast"?
Him: Blackout while I was out reset everything.
Him: It was back to where things were yesterday.
Him: Only worse.
Me: But the drive still reads?
Him: Slightly.
Him: Just enough to tell me it refuses to boot.
Him: Oh well, got a 111g hdd now.
Me: Not toast, just browned.
Me: After you get your computer set up on the new HDD (With a anti-Virus) plug in the old drive as a slave and see if you can read it.
Me: I bet 80% of your files will still read just fine.
Me: Trust me, I had to deal with this all the time while working as a tech.
Me: Nothing is lost, you just can't find it at the moment.
Him: Well after the format everything's shot.
Me: You formated the drive?
Him: Yes.
Me: Why?
Him: Only way to get the registry fixed.
Him: Nothing else was working.
Me: Ooooh, Dan.
Me: Well, have you put anything on the drive since formating it?

.....

Me: Please tell me you aren't loading windows on it right now...

Him: I reformatted it last night, loaded windows, and it crapped out again during a blackout today.
Him: I'd gotten firefox and a couple instant messengers installed.

.....

Me: Oh, Dan.
