I could freaking sh!t a brick. I'm a total idiot. I was trying to install Ubuntu Linux, and I have 3 HD's on my system. My dumbass self decided to install it on the wrong HD and I wiped my music collection, along with some very old files that I have saved since getting the HD. At least 5 years worth. I am a fvcking idiot.

:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

*Update* Well, it looks like I'm not getting my stuff back, and if I were to get it all back, it would have to rename 50,000+ files, after I found out what they were in the first place. I'm just going to wipe the HD again and start over. I'll just chalk it up as some experience on what not to do again. Thanks everyone for the help.

One reason I have my important data like music backed up many multiple times on different machines and on HDs in the closet. Hard drives are so cheap these days it doesn't make sense not to have a HD backup in the closet.

haha. A little too late for that. I just finished re-formatting and changing the file system back to NTFS.

Look for the program "getdataback" you can probably still recover a good chunk of that data, even if you have already reformatted it again.

:( I'm still bitter about when my RAID 5 array went down, and I lost years and years of pictures... Atleast you can get your music back (eventually).

I just downloaded that "getdataback" trial and I'm going to see if they are still there. God I hope they are still there.

You know, i was actually thinking of picking up some DL DVD's too just to back all of my stuff up. I should have done that.

Yeah you have to backup to multiple places. I know it doesn't help you now and probably pisses you off.

Also, plugging in the drives you need when installing an OS is the best way to do it. I learned after I formatted the wrong drive. Especially when doing a Linux install, sometimes i just punched the wrong drive into the command line and that was it :(

I feel for you. Try and learn from this mistake though. At least it isn't years worth of work like a book or something you know.

I did that once too (Quick format). Was able to recover almost 98% of my music/data with free recovery software.

If you did a quick format, then you still have a chance of recovering most of it. It will just depend on how much data you have overwritten with your ubuntu install. If you did a regular format (long version), then your chances of recovering drop a lot but still might be worth to try.

use couple of free recovery softwares and see what you come up with.

Good Luck (oh, and start backing up your data)

my brother did something that bad once. had an 80gig drive almost full of music he had ripped or downloaded, was having problems getting it recognized in a new system, so i told him to set the jumper to cable select....

the jumpers also had a setting to wipe the drive.

he confused the two. i was able, technically, to recover almost everything....but it was as ....files. nothing was labeled or named. i told him he could rename and retag all his stuff, or ditch it and start over.

he started over. poor guy, took him a few afternoons just to rip his discs, and i dont think he ever bothered to download all the live music he had

Well, technically, I did a "regular" long reformat twice: Once to install Ubuntu, and once again to change the FS back to NTFS. I don't think my chances are very good. I've got about 10 minutes left on a getdataback scan. I'll see what it comes up with.

How'd it go?

Well, I'm using getdataback and it's not showing anything on it. When I go to the recovery tree, I see the names of some of my old files in the log window, but I see that getdataback isn't indexing them.
