now don't get me wrong I am not a racist person and actually like Mexicans and other races, BUT when you are the only white guy they try to make it hard enough on you to make you quit and recently at least the management supports them.
I actually feel bad for them as they get paid much less than I do, like 2-3 dollars an hour less. The management loves them as they work for peanuts and will work straight through with no breaks and don't try to stand up for their rights.
even the legal ones are afraid of deportation so humble down and take unlimited crap from management.
I have lost 2 jobs in the last year and am currently at risk of losing my current one at the Anaheim ca convention center over the same problem.
the situation is that management wants more Mexicans so is pushing and treating me to just quit. they would love to replace this whiny white boy with a quiet slave that cannot even speak English and therefore cannot complain.

am I wrong here do I have to try at 45 years old to change careers?

please help me see some sense in this.

You have to keep adapting and keep your options open. If it's not immigrants, it's something else. I see it at where I work also. Professional office environment. There are people here who've worked at this same job for years. That's all they've ever done and they never took the opprotunity or time to learn new skills just in case something happens that would cause them to lose their job. Well, something does happen to some of them and these same people then spend months trying to get their job back at the same place, doing the same thing. No pay check while they're fighting to get their old job back. Angry at the circumstances or whatever.

Other people in the office, doing the same thing they do, move on immediately to something else when they lose their job. The difference is that those who could move on immediately took the time all throughout their career to keep their skills updated and learn new things, even things that aren't necessarily related to their current job.

You should read Anthony Bourdain's book, Kitchen Confidential. He thinks highly (not kidding) of cooks from Latin America.

And yes, you'll need a new career.

Anyone in Catering / Hospitality / Hotel trades that I went to school with either owns their own business in the industry, or has been replaced by immigrant labor.

Seems pretty obvious, you must learn espanol, change your last name to gonzalez, get a tan, take $3hr less and not take any breaks.

If they are hiring legal immigrants who just happen to be willing to work harder for less money, you really have nothing to complain about. If you think the business is doing something illegal, report it.

When we talk about illegal immigration and the problems it causes, this should not even come up. Work is work and you will be paid by what you are worth. The area I live in has a high percentage of mexicans, and there are just as many local restaurants and businesses that won't hire mexicans as there are places that will only hire mexicans. In fact, besides mexican restaurants, I have never seen a place replace everyone with the workers you have described. Odds are, with your experience, you should be able to find a better job.

The employer is probably being shown some fake/stolen documents during the hiring process and AFAIK as long as the documents look right they're absolved of any responsibility.

I would expect this out of a teenager, not a 45 year old. I don't even know what advise I could give you as you been doing so well in life, there isn't time to teach an old dog new tricks. Well there is time, but you can't teach a stupid old dog new tricks.

SoCal has a lot of hispanics in the food industry, and that's nothing new. However I find it hard to believe that at 45 that you are competing in your career with illegals. I also find it somewhat hard to believe you can lose 2 positions this year solely dependent on the competition and not your aptitude or attitude.

Seems to me you have two choices in this career...get better at what you do or do it somewhere else, ie away from border states or states with a large number of competent inexpensive restaurant workers.

If they are illegal, report them.

If they are legal, then nothing you can do about. You have to question yourself whether your skills are worth the amount of money they are paying you just because you are the white guy.
