I'm Israeli and proud of it. Overseas I don't have any trouble because I lived in Australia for 10 years (=accent + citizenship). I usually don't think twice about telling people where I'm from, but I'm Australian when I need to be.
I work with a lot of Indian nationals and due to the continuing rivalry between India and Pakistan, it would not surprise me if you told me that some of those people are actually Pakistanis who say they are Indian (or otherwise) simply because they are afraid not of being shunned by their white co-workers, but by their Indian co-workers. I would like to believe that the people I work with are above that kind of thinking, but I'm sure there is one in every crowd who would hold a grudge against someone because of his nationality.
No big deal. I had a professor from Iran last semester. He's one of my favorite professors I've met.
He helped me design a neural network to predict congressional voting records, and we ended up spending an hour talking about politics.
I have friends from Vietnam, Korea, China, India, and Ivory Coast. I don't treat any of them differently than any of my other friends.
What you should do is tell those nosy people where you live. this usually ends the questioning right there.
If I were you, I would be more afraid of telling people that I was a muslim, than a Pakistani. Although the latter is almost always implies the former. But alot of Americans are dumb and don't know that.
