just would like to say that going from RedHat 7.0 and 7.1 to Mandrake 8.1 Im really happy. The install went flawlessly, it was quick and very easy to setup! It detected all my hardware perfectly! One thing that is so cool is that my scroll button accually works one my mouse! I am also very impressed with the browsier that comes default in Gnome. I have installed this one my second Pc and will be eventually turning this into a multimedia Pc for music files and outputting Video's and DVD's to my HDTV (when I get one)! I still have lots of commands and other things to learn about this OS but I will defeat it!

Mandrake 8.1 is perfect for those with a WinX background looking for an alternative OS. It is most likely the easiest to setup for a beginner (it is easier than setting up Win98). After you become really familiar with Nix, you will probably want to experiment with more (but completely optional). Mandrake is getting to the point (if not already there) where I would recommend it to my grandmother :)

I installed Mandrake 8.1 a couple days ago and am very impressed. I am a newbie at Linux but this 8.1 is very user friendly. Only problem I have is I can't get my modem to work. It is a US Robotics model 2976 Voice Fax PCI Hardware modem. Linux installs it but when I try to get online it tells me the modem isn't responding. Not sure how to fix this but will keep looking for the answer.
Anybody have any ideas?

I would hold off on that HDTV because from what I read in /. the MPAA is going to come up with new standards in a few years that will make all HDTV's obsolete in a few years.

I know nothing about Linux. I was just wondering if Mandrake would install/configure fine on my computer (Prime in system rigs). Last time I tryed it didn't configure my network card or my sound card.

Everything looks fine but what version of Mandrake was that and what kind of nic are you using ? I had problems with my nick but since am kinda lazy I just went ahead and bought a 3com nic for about $30 and haven't regretted it since.

P.S. Try http:\\www.alsa-project.org and http:\\www.opensound.com to see if that sound card is supported as well. I use OSS sound drivers with my SB-Live X-Gamer card because of the extra features they provide and it only cost me $35 bucks which isn't too expensive.

Wow, You actually got your mouse scrolling in Mandrake? I could not for the life of me get that working. Since switching to SuSE 7.3, I finally get to use my scroll again

Yes, you will....I am inching along myself, but learning and doing more averyday. Today alone I got Yahoo up and rolling, set up and used GIMP, opened wav. and avi. files, replied to some threads on AT, and did some more desktop configuring.. I know it don't sound like much, but you got to understand I am a total Linux noob boob.:)

Mandrake 8.1 is damn nice. My mouse scrolls just fine (when plugged into usb). NIC, everything works... sound, sounds kinda whacky, except from xmms. The only problem I have with linux.. is that all the distros come with alot of crap loaded on them, including X11. Which makes me feel like a wanna-be. I've come along way in messing with Linux.. I've actually got a counter-strike server up and running off it.. let me tell you, SOo much better than running off 2k.

FreeBSD... you're next ;)
I've actually put off using BSD because I want to install it on my new computer(building it in a week!!!)...

BTW.. does anyone else find themselves doing more and more in windows from command line, after using linux?

Mandrake 8.1 user here also, installed without a hitch, nothing like the good old days with Red Hat 5.1 or Free BSD.

No, I find myself using Windows less and less ;)

I started on Red Hat 5.1. Also learned a bit using FreeBSD. Learned the most from the at other OS... ;)

I've been using Linux for years now, since about 1997 or so, and have used mandrake since I started. it rocks.

I disagree. Mandrake8.1 (or mandrake8.0) is easy to set up, but that's where it stops.
It's VERY fastly broken, I personally did over 20 mandrake (both 8.1&8.0) installs, so I know how fastly it's broken.
So if you want a userfriendly distro, use SuSe. At least it works too.
