I am pissed.. ATT wont give me the $30 unlimited deal on data

I was doing back ground stuff in preparation for upgrading to Iphone 4.

I called ATT to ask about if I am under the grandfathered plan, as far I see it I was technically qualified. I have an Iphone (2g though) and I have been with ATT for 10 years.

Turns out it wont be given to me, only people with 3G plans. They wont even give me the $30 dataplan for being an existing customer, they said I need a new plan. Which sucks, cause I know 2Gb of data will be easily crossed, heck I push 700+ a month on my 2G just imagine on my 3G what that might be like.

Which is screwy, I dont switch phones all that often and when I do I get screwed.

Anyway of bringing this up to ATT or Steve Jobs? I can always email steve jobs and ATT chief too. But any other suggestions? Consumerist?

I thought you could only be 'grandfathered in' by using your existing plan... meaning you pay full unsubsidized price on the phone and don't start a new contract. I don't think ANYBODY is allowed to get a new phone under the discounted new contract prices while keeping their unlimited data plan. If you had to blame anybody it's AT&T. I don't see how you could possibly think Jobs has anything to do with how AT&T structures their data plans and contracts, but I guess you just wanted to puff your chest and stand up to the Big Bad Jobs.

No, you can get the subsidized price on a new phone and renew your contract and still be grandfathered in/continue to use your $30/plan.

I am getting the new iPhone at the subsidized price while renewing my contract. I will still be on the $30/unlimited plan. The rep you spoke with just didn't know what he was talking about.

As long as you are currently on a 3G unlimited plan you can continue upgrading your contract with the iPhone 4. Those that are either new customers or upgrading to 3G from something else will be bound to the new terms.

This is wrong.

That is right - however, OP is not currently on a 3G plan - he is on a 2G plan. Therein lies the difference.

. . . as far I see it I was technically qualified. I have an Iphone (2g though) and I have been with ATT for 10 years.

Your best bet is to get someone else's 3G plan transferred to you. Then change your phone number.

think long and hard before signing yourself over to att for another two years. I would personally examine other options.

If you want unlimited data, you'll have to leave ATT. Verizon will probably adopt a tiered system soon, too, so you should switch now if you want them. Sprint and T-Mo will probably stick with unlimited to differentiate them from the VZW and ATT, because they need as many subscribers as they can get, right now.

That's what I was trying to say, guess I wasn't very clear.

AT&T had confirmed that if you were on the 2G plan you would still be grandfathered in. Can't find the link.

I am sure Steve Jobs feels your pain but he would ask why do you buy an iPhone 4 for?
