This annoyed me as well. There were scenes where random people in the audience would cackle at the strangest moments. Usually, it was in a scene with Gollum. I suppose people thought they were supposed to laugh at CG characters like Jar-Jar (for which Lucas ought to do time in Hell).

Damn, people get on my nerves sometimes
