I am making a new product for cars that hasn't been made before

adlep's magnetic adapter to hold messages at the back of cars is:

  • This is a great idea. I'd consider getting something like that

  • Good idea, but you I have few reservations. If it is cheap enough I would consider it.

  • Not sure, maybe yes, maybe not.

  • Not a good idea. Potential negatives outweight postives about it.

  • This product sucks. Totally useless like a jump to conclusions mat from Office Space.

You already have this trademarked right? You did before you made this thread...right?

OF course...
I have a provisional patent, trademark, and website domain to go with it. I am about to put it up on kickstarter...

So, yes...
I can prove the "prior art" for sure.
Edit: The frame will not be difficult to do or copy, but IMO what really will make this project special is the web service that allows people to share these signs.

I think:

1. People won't buy it because it can be easily removed.
2. Plastic bumpers...

True, but the part will be cheap enough for you not to care. Also, you will have to register the frame in order to use the web site.
Re plastic bumpers: 97% of the cars have enough of the steel space on the back for at least the bumper sticker sized frame (3in by 11in - our primary market).

Edit: Provided that the theft is not an issue, would you buy something like that? Also, most people will not have it "on" all the time. The typical usage scenario will be: important elections, selling something, and driving from and to the game.

Have you ever tried removing a sticker from some random car? as long as he makes them look like normal stickers people won't try to remove them.

That is what I was thinking as well, especially #1. I suppose if it was dirt cheap, like 99 cents, I might consider it. However, if it is more than a couple of bucks I think they would be too easy to steal.

I will make a theft deterrent system. You will have to register the frame in order to use the web site that goes with it. We will make the site nice enough so that you actually want to USE it to create and share messages. In order to register for the site, we will require a serial number of the frame - so that we can "bind it" with your profile.

While you CAN use the frame without the site, it's functionality will get reduced without it - average thief does not know how to use the photoshop 🙂

Would you risk jail for few bucks? Messing with someone else's car can get you in serious trouble or ass whooping.

I think it's probably too geeky, in that your target audience is mainly geeks. It's going to be very hard competing with companies that sell custom car magnets at less than a dollar a piece. And then, those companies also sell a wide variety of custom shapes and sizes. But what do I know. Good luck!!!

The problem is, if anyone doesn't like the "message", they will just rip it off the car and throw it in the nearest garbage can or gutter.

1. i hate bumper stickers
2. website registration to enable full functionality of a bumper sticker? really?
3. magnets will screw up paint for sure
4. i seriously doubt the magnets would hold on anything but a pickup truck - under a plastic bumper cover there are several inches of styrofoam.

Well, I am the OP so..., yeah I need a reason. Don't mind the criticism at all. Shoot.

Without going into a tirade. Just how long do you think you can sell these before business dries up because this is an entirely useless product? I say do something that is useful to society, that's all.

No Truck Nutz?

Already been done. But a better idea than the OP's would be front bumper boobs. Why should the women be left out? Besides, they already have bras for cars, how can you have bras without boobs? Also, people call the car a she so it all makes sense you see.

1. Exactly, my adapter will let people take them off. So the stickers wont be permanent. You will not have to put up with Clinton-Gore 96 messages anymore.

2. Optional but if you want to get additional templates, or share the messages with your friends, or make new messages, it will be required. But you DON'T have to do it - if you are fine with Photoshop, you don't need web site.

3. Not, they won't. They do not physically touch the surface of the car. They are suspended like 1/8 of an inch above the metal panel of the car (this is part of my patent).

3. You do not apply it to plastic. You apply it to a metal part of the car, like so:

Almost all cars have enough of a metal space at the back to accommodate for a bumper sticker sized adapter.
