This is really more for my buddy, it's a car he wants to purchase.

He wants a reliable midsized/small sedan with decent handling, gas mileage, and a decent engine. He has driven and likes the last generation accord, the new altima, and the mazda3. He hates the camry and corolla, doesn't like the new civic, and doesn't like hatchbacks or wagons.

The car has to be financed, unfortunately, so it must be bought from a dealership. If he wants to buy a certified-pre owned car, what other options open up?

The best I could think of is a certified pre-owned 07 accord lx with a v6.

2011 Sonata - highest rated midsize out right now

If he is looking for a great deal -leftover 2010 Sonata's have big discounts.

I'd also have him look at the Fusion & Mazda 6.

No budget listed.

Does he want full-size, mid-size or compact?

you don't necessarily have to finance through a dealership though. You can obtain your own financing and pay whoever you get the car from in cash.

Yes, but wouldn't financing through a dealership or manufacturer be much cheaper than say through a bank?

Sorry, the price must be around 20,000-22,000 new. He said midsize sedan and he really liked the altima, but he also liked the mazda3 as well. It's too bad he has no savings at the moment to just buy a used car.

mazda 3 is not a midsize... as long as his credit score is good, you can finance through 3rd party and buy any car really. A bit more work, but ultimately you are looking at financing what, 20k?

Sorry I am clueless. How is this done? I think I may need to go the same route.

I think he likes the mazda3 for its price/handling/gas mileage despite its smaller size, so I'd say he's looking for midsize/compact but leaning towards midsized cars.

Find your own financing. That is the only thing different than your usual car buying process.

The 2010 Ford Fusion is pretty decent. Nothing exciting about that car, but nothing wrong with it either. Kinda like an American Camry.
